IMHO Laken/Lakin is a girl name. I can't see it on a little boy.

Really? You think it sounds feminine? Hmmm... I don't at all. I found it on a name site that listed it under "popular boys names". They listed both Laken and Lakin. I'm on the fence so I thought I'd see what others thought of it. Thanks for your opinion.

It's not terrible, but there are a lot of similar names I'd prefer (only because I don't like word names much, so this sounds too much like just "lake" KWIM?).
Lincoln
Larkin
Lorcan
Lachlan (land of lakes )

My neice has a friend that I never met before name Laken (its a girl), and ever since I heard my sister mention it I have liked it (for a girl). It is really high on my list right now (for a girl). I also looked it up on several web sites and it is listed as either gender, so I guess it would be your opinion that matters, but in mine it sounds really girly!

I just wanted to add that it is my post here on the bottom that says WDYT of Laken Violet. So that might give you some more opinions on the name, reading those posts.

I was surprised too that the name Laken is considered a 'girl' name. Apparently Lake is still a boys name, but I could not do a one syllable name with my last name, sounds too choppy. I am naming my boy Lachlan, which does mean 'of the lakes' and we might call him Lake sometimes, both from the meaning and because his initials will be LAK.
Lakin to me looks like a misspelling of Larkin, though the only Larkin I know was a girl.

If I heard the name out somewhere, I'd probably guess it was a girl. Unisex names don't bother me, but if they bother you, I'd take that into consideration since I'm apparently not the only one who thought that.
Personally, I'm just not a fan of this name for either gender. It's just...okay. I don't hate it, but I don't see the appeal. I like Lake marginally better, but I'm not a fan of that either. In general, I don't like names that are also words. But also I just don't like the way it sounds for some reason. But I LOVE Lachlan. It's similar in sound (but different enough that I love it) and meaning, and you could call him Lake as a nn if you wanted. And Lachlan is firmly in the boy category -- I don't foresee any gender confusion. That would be my recommendation.
Great suggestion for the op Annie! Laken is all girl to me, but it might be because that is all I have heard it for, and I am considering it for #2 (against my Dh's wishes LOL)!
