The meaning of Cameron is "crooked nose". Now normally I would say whatever and not care about a name meaning. BUT, I have noticed that I have not told DH the meaning of the name, afraid it would sway him away from the name. (A name I just love and he is on the fence about, so I am withholding information! Bad I know!)
Our other 2 boys have the names with these meanings: (at least in my babyname book)
Brendan "little raven" Ryan "little king"
Aaron "enlightened" Michael "Who is like God"
If we end up choosing Cameron Joseph, it would be "crooked nose" & "God will add"
So what does everyone think? I know its stupid to be concerned about the name's meaning, as it really doesn't matter much in the scheme of things, right?? If anyone knows any other meaning of Cameron, let me know so I can forward that info on to my DH!
Thanks!

It's not stupid to be concerned about a name's meaning. A meaning like that would turn me off a name, and it's too bad because Cameron is otherwise a good name.
I have to be honest, the only reason I don't like Cameron for a boy is the meaning (HATE it on a girl though LOL). I never could get past the "crooked nose" connotation, especially since I'm afraid it's one people are actually pretty familiar with. (If you really look at the meaning of both names as you stated, God will add a crooked nose is actually a little funny LOL). It's a shame because it is a name I would generally like in theory. Just don't care for the meaning.
I don't think it's stupid to be concerned about it at all. I might be persuaded to use a name with a less-flattering meaning, but I think it would probably bug me deep down, KWIM?
Guess it just depends on how much it would bother you (or your dh ... he should at least be made aware LOL).
HTH!

I really LOVE the name Cameron for a boy. Learning the meaning from you does make it a bit less appealing, though. Hmm... I don't know. If you're that hung up on admitting the meaning to your DH then maybe you should come up w/ something else. It obviously means you do have a problem w/ the meaning too (as your dh would).
Sorry I wasn't much help. Like I said, Cameron is an awesome name for a boy but the meaning leaves something to be desired!
I posted earlier, but was just thinking ... have you considered Camden as an alternative? I usually wouldn't advocate this name, living on the east coast, but if you don't live near NJ it really should be a problem.
Anyway, the meaning is probably the nicest of all the Cam- names I can think of ... I believe it means crooked/winding valley, rather than the usual crooked body part (as in Cameron or Campbell).
As long as you don't live near the city, I don't think it would be a problem. (And you could always say you were thinking of England - not NJ - if anyone brings it up ... that should put a stop to any negative comparisons LOL).
Anyway, just a thought!

Oooh, I like "crooked stream" better than "crooked nose".....I will tell my DH both meanings and watch his reaction. I only have 7 weeks left and Cameron is the name that I just can't let go of! We are waiting to see him to be sure that his name fits him, but at this point, I would be shocked if I swayed from this name. Thanks for the "crooked stream" reference. I will have to do some more searching as I did not run across that yet in my searches.

Ok, I just looked it up for you in a few Celtic name books, and I have good news and bad news. (Which do you want first? LOL).
I'll go with the good news. You could tell your husband that the Camerons are a Highland clan known for their courage and resourcefulness (nothing bad about that ... and it's all true! LOL).
However, it seems the name is a derrivative of cam, meaning crooked, and sron, meaning nose. So, quite literally, crooked nose.
Anyway, HTH! :)

Yes, Camden is also on my list, but DH seems to ignore me when I bring that one up. I live in the Michigan, so I do know of the city in NJ, it doesn't really bother me about the name association. I am always trying to think of new names to add to my list to take with me to the hospital.......7 weeks to go.....Thanks for all you help!

I love Cameron. Personally, I couldn't care less about the meaning of names.
