The name "Sequoia" for a girl ...

  • Is unusual and lovely.
  • Reminds me of forests and tall trees.
  • Makes me think of a big SUV.
  • Looks weird and hard to pronounce.
  • Is not that unusual! I know people with that name.

Absolutely! I love it to pieces! If my son was a girl, his name would've been Sequoia Sheree. And my 2nd one would've been that, but 3 wks before I had her, we changed it to Jocelyn Sheree cuz we didn't know what to call her for a nn and we were afraid ppl would tease her about being a tree and also call her "sacky" for short.

okay, this name DOES make me think of forests and trees (but not SUVs, lol)...but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I think in a way that Sequoia is a cute "nature name". Yes, it also looks weird, and when she is young and her peers are reading her name on paper they will probably have a hard time pronouncing it, but I am nearly positive that during the elementary school years children will learn about the Sequoia and then not have a problem with pronunciation. She may get teased at some point, but she'll also probably be known as "the girl with the cool name" at some point as well.

If you love it, go for it. I picture it on a majestic, tall, slender girl with long, deep brown wavy hair.

Thanks for your reply - the last part brought tears to my eyes, because if I am lucky and this is finally my little girl coming next March (I have three sons), she would look just like that, I am sure. Thank you for the encouragement. :) :)

I love the name!!! I wanted to name my daughter that but Sequoia didn't go with the last name Shuck haha so we went with Makayla, it is an unusual name, and she will be made fun of, and most likely at some point in time want to change her name, but by the time she is high school no one will say much other then "what a beautiful name!" trust me I know, my dad named me Starla....from Battle Star Galactica....yea.....lol but it is ok, I got teased alot! now I am 21 and people can't stop telling me how beautiful it is, and you know I love it now. I am unique, my mother always told me that "people will remember your name because it is unique, if you are unique people will remember you" and you know what, I stuck to that. Good luck!!

I don't have a problem with tree names in general. I like Willow, and wouldn't mind Larch or even Birch. But to me Sequoia is a big, huge, massive tree. That's not the sort of name that I think fits a baby girl, a little girl, a teen girl and a woman. JMHO.

Thanks everyone, for your feedback ... Jorie (I like your name, by the way) my Sequoia would look very much like you describe - her older brother looks just like that. Warmest wishes to all of you and your children ...
