Interesting! I didn't know that about the Irish origins of the name. It's a family name for me, my g-gmother's. Unfortunately my LESS cool G-gmother has the nicer name. My cooler g-gmother's name was Agathe. :P
BTW, I was also really interested on what you said on the other thread about Maura being both Irish and Spanish. I picked Claire because it works in 3 of our backgrounds - Irish, French and German, and my DH happens to be Spanish and Irish/British. Plus, his great-aunt's name was Maura. Of course, that makes him think of it as an "old lady" name. How does Claire and Maura sound? I really like it, and I think I will add it to my list now!
Aww ... I'll admit, I LOVE Agathe (and Agatha LOL). And Aggie as a nn ... absolutely lovely. I think it was the baby's name in Nanny McPhee (great kids' movie with quite a few great names, btw). ;)
And Claire and Maura are wonderful together! I'd love it even without the family and heritage connections, so those just shoot it to the top of the list for me.

Maura is definitely on my short list now! My final test is to see how French people pronounce it. I will test it on my teacher's aide who is French at school tomorrow and see if she can pronounce it. My feeling is it will be pronounceable, since the sounds are the same in French and in English.
The one wierd thing is that the g-aunt whose name is Maura, I'm pretty sure her middle name was Claire. I think my MIL told me that. So it might seem like we are naming the baby completely after her, and I hardly even knew her! I think I met her once, and DH wasn't too close to her either.
Any ideas for a middle name for Maura?
Steph
I'm sure you're right ... I don't foresee a pronunciation problem with Maura.
Can I suggest Maura Genevieve? ;) Another one that (obviously) works in French and can be considered to also have Celtic ties (when related to Guinevere). That was my first thought, anyway. Heck, Maura Guinevere works too. LOL
Ok, that was probably about a dozen more than you'd wanted (LOL), but obviously Maura works beautifully with a number of mns. ;) And French pronunciations aren't a problem with any of these.
Have I mentioned loving Maura for you?

Thanks again Kelli I love Maura Genevieve! I also like Maura Camille a lot. This one is definitely on the short list I am working to present to DH for our discussion next month.

Good to know there are some around our age (I'm 30 so almost the same age as you). I had never met or heard of any really until my DH's great-aunt and Maura Tierney from ER.
I guess that blasts DH's old-lady name theory!
