NN's - just for fun

  • I've always had a NN and love it
  • I've always had a NN and would rather not
  • I had a NN but changed it when I got older
  • I wish I had a NN
  • I will not let anyone call me by a NN - I don't like the idea

I wish I had a nn!!! Simply shortening the already-short name, Kelli, to Kel just doesn't cut it. Anyone want to nn me? LOL Guess that's why I like longer names with nn potential. ;)

I like the familiarity of being able to use a nn with family and close friends. I always introduce myself as Stephanie and write out my full name. However, most of my closest friends/family call me Steph. While I greatly prefer Stephanie, I like the closeness that a nn implies. It always rubs me the wrong way when someone I've just met decides to shorten my name -- it just feels wrong.

And actually, my dad almost exclusively still calls me Snicks (shortened from my baby nn of Snickerdoodle ;-) ). He tried to drop it when I was in college b/c he thought I'd think it was too babyish, but it was just weird. It felt more natural to hear him say Snicks again. :-)

I use tons of nicknames with my daughters and can't imagine it any other way.

I'll introduce myself as Rebecca on the phone but in person I usually use Becky. I've always been Becky to family and I'm really comfortable with it. I adore that I have a more elegant name like Rebecca but I'm more of a less formal person so like that I can go by a nickname.

My husband on the other hand is Martin and only I and his 2 sisters ever call him Marty. I think it's because his name is Christian Martin so if you know him you call him Martin and if you don't you call him Christian. He knows you especially DON'T know him if you try to call him Chris.

I have lots of nicknames, some given by family members, some by friends, and some by the children I babysit for (which means that their parents occasionally call me that, too). My mom calls me almost exclusively by a nickname, and so does my dad...but they're different nicknames. By dad calls me Doll or Shug (which is short for Sugar...yeah, we're from the South). My friends call me varying nicknames that have developed during our friendships, but weirdly, none of them call me by the same nickname.

Honestly, I've never really thought about whether I like it or not. Now that I do think of it, I can say that I certainly enjoy the intimacy it implies. My name is unique, and no one ever spells it or pronounces it correctly on the first try (which is why I often argue vehemently against silly spellings and weird names on this board). So, having someone who knows me intimately enough to say and spell my name correctly means a lot; having longtime friends who know me well enough to nickname me means even more. And of course, having special nicknames from my parents is nice, too.

I voted that I won't let anyone call me by a nn, but really no one's ever tried that hard. I don't know if I care either way. My name being Karen I could have Kari or I thought Ren would be cool, but never tried it (and don't really need it).

My DH goes by his mn, too, so we know if it's a telemarketer if they ask for Frederick (or worse, try to shorten it to Fred - LOL!). When we got married, several people that we invited on my side addressed their cards to Fred and Stephanie b/c they didn't realize he went by Scott -- oops!

My SIL was always Jenny as a kid, but I think she now uses Jennifer professionally, but close friends/family call her Jen. Of course, old habits die hard, and her parents/grandparents still call her Jenny most of the time. :-)

That's so funny, the same thing happened at our wedding. Cards addressed to Chris and Becky. Lol We get a lot of telemarketer calls for Christine, or Christiane, I think it's funny that people don't know how to pronounce Christian.
