Bailey Grace -- very much a filler mn, unless it has special meaning to you, but it got my default vote (see comments below). Of course, if all you want is a filler that "sounds" nice, this is fine ... that's how filler mns become so, after all, because they flow with just about anything.

Bailey Karis -- The Welsh name Carys, meaning love/beloved, is beautiful, and I would have voted for Bailey Carys in a second! However, I'm not sure if Karis is a misspelling or simply a different name I'm unfamiliar with, but I don't find it nearly as attractive, and the K spelling looks very trendy. Bailey Carys is very nice, though. :)

Bailey Lauren -- much as I like Lauren, the -ley Laur- sounds back-to-back don't work for me.

You are right about Grace - it is a filler name. A lot of friends and family seem to like that one and have suggested we use it. We are having trouble with finding a middle name for Bailey which we are set on b/c that was my grandmother's maiden name and before she passed I promised I would name my first daughter after her. I love the name Bailey Ella (also Ella is a family name on my dh's side); however, our last name starts with a D and so that pretty much cancels that idea or any other mn starting with a vowel.

As for Karis, it actually means "graceful" and is a Greek name. I will see what my husband thinks about Carys though. I just didn't know if it looked as good with the 'y' in both Bailey and Carys.

And Lauren is just a name I like plus my name is Laura, so I kind of thought that might be nice. But, my dh doesn't really like the name Lauren, so we probably won't use it anyway. I also agree it just doesn't flow all that well.

I am worried she might not have a mn. I just can't seem to like anything all that much other than Bailey Ella and am so sad we can't use it for fear she would get made fun of for the initials B.E.D.!

Thanks so much for your advice. It was very helpful!

I love Carys (spelt this way). Not a huge fan of Bailey at all, but Bailey Carys is a nice combo. I would spell it the proper way.

I am used to people not liking Bailey or saying it is a dog's name, but it was a family name and we will definitely be using it. So the dilemma is finding a good middle name to go with a last name that starts with D. We have already gone through our entire list of fmaily names on both my dh's side and mine in search for a MN and have had absolutely no luck.

Another one I like is Bailey Katherine, but it seems everyone I know is using the name Katherine or Kate.

I like that you're using Bailey for your grandmother. :) I know you've said none of your family names work for mns, but do you mind if I ask what her fn and mn were? Just curious, and it's always possible they got left out since you were using her maiden name, KWIM?

I'd suggest not using Grace in your case, especially since your main reason for considering it is that you can't seem to find a name you DO like and "A lot of friends and family seem to like that one and have suggested we use it." Pretty much the definition of a filler.

If you want a name that means grace, I see where you're going with Karis. I actually have heard of Charis (not sure if this is the more authentic form or not, but it is a Greek name meaning grace or kindness). Here's the link to BTN if you want to check it out. http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=charis They don't have Karis listed as a variant, so I'm guessing that's just an Anglicized form. So if you want the grace meaning but want to avoid the double-Ys or K-misspelling trend, Bailey Charis might be a great option for you. FWIW, I had assumed you were going for Carys before because a mn with a Welsh origin seemed much more likely with Bailey than a Greek one, KWIM?

As for Ella, the B.E.D. initials aren't terrible (not as bad as, say, B.A.D. would be LOL), but if you want something that flows better, doesn't have initials that spell anything and still honors/contains "ella," what about using one of the many names that end in -ella or -elle?

Bailey ...

Danielle/a
Della
Estelle/a
Gabrielle/a (this is also rather popular, though)
Giselle
Idelle/a (another English/Welsh option)
Rochelle/Richelle/Raquel(le)/Racquel(le)
Stella
Michelle
Noelle
* these last two are filler mns as well, but I left them in anyway

It's actually pretty hard to find an "Elle/L" name that flows very well with the fn Bailey (thanks to the -ley ending). All that said, aren't there any other names out there you just love? You don't HAVE to use a mn "type" name (Grace, Ann, Lynn, Marie, etc.), KWIM? If you weren't using a family name for her fn, what other names might you have considered? They might work just as well in the mn slot. ;) Just a thought.

Thanks so much for all of y'alls opinions! I really appreciate it. I thought we were pretty set on Karis, but after reading all of your opinions I think we will probably end up going with Bailey Katherine and call her Bailey Kate for short. Both names are family names, and I think that flows really well. Now, I just hope my dh will be completely on board with it and that we won't change our minds again :-).

Thanks again!
Laura
