I prefer Reid, since it is always pronounced "reed." Read can be "red" or "reed" depending on the context. I'd pick Reid or Reed just to eliminate any confusion.
For some reason, I don't like Reed...it makes me think of the "stick" meaning, I guess. RE: verbs as names, that shouldn't exclude them, correct? (Wade comes to mind) Very good point about Reid vs. the possible "Red" pronunciation of Read!
Of the two I would picke Reid. But I prefer Reed. Would you considered that spelling?

the choices I think would be Reid or Reed - of which I'd be completely neutral, either one
but Read can be pronounced thte same as RED - as in "I read People Magazine yesterday afternoon"
