I like the idea of having a unisex name for a girl much more so than a boy. I think Riley is a beautiful name for a girl. I have a friend that named her daughter Riley. If you are looking at it for a girl's name I would most definitely choose that as one of the top 2

Definitely all boy to me (well, really, to anyone, since those who do use it/like it for a girl admit it is a unisex, not feminine, name ... much like using Cameron, Mason or Aidan, which would still be masculine names, just used on a girl).

I actually just asked a friend about this, since she has a 2-year-old son named Riley. I wondered if it bothered her that many girls were being given the same name as her rough-and-tumble little boy. She said it did at first, but now she just thinks it's funny that they would pass up all the lovely girl names out there in favor of such a masculine name, so really she feels bad for the girls, not her son.

Not sure what side of the coin you're coming from (ie. if you're considering it for a girl or a boy), but thought maybe her take on the matter would give you a first-hand look at it. ;)

Kelli,

Thanks for your response. What you wrote does make me feel better! My DH and I have had such a hard time coming up with names we both like. Yesterday we were driving down the road just talking about names. He finally told me he could "live" (it's a start!) with Tessa Ann, my absolute favorite name for a girl. Everything I threw out there for a boy, however, he gave me the thumbs down!! Well, we were listening to B.B. King (we're big blues fans) and I asked him what BB's real name is and he said Riley....we both just looked at each other and it was like Yeah!! That's a cool name for a boy! I have heard this name used for a girl too which I totally don't like, so I just wanted to get everybody's take on if they think it's more masculine or feminine. I'm glad to see that the poll is showing in my favor! Yay!! Looks like we might have our names!! Anyway, thanks Kelli for taking the time to respond.

No problem. ;) So glad to hear you're considering it for a boy, too, btw! I always hate writing stuff like that (that could be taken negatively if, say, you were hoping everyone would say girl LOL), but figure if you're asking for opinions that's the whole point. Like I said, our friends with the little boy Riley don't feel "weird" about it being used for girls at all ... just another boy name some people will inevitably stick on a girl (and not many seem safe from that now anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it much). Great name! ;)

Ps. I absolutely LOVE Tessa, by the way!!!

Hi Kylli,

After further contemplation of the name, I'm thinking about changing the spelling from Riley to Ryley!!! =o) J/K! Geeze I'm so bad!

Glad you like the name Tessa. It's been a favorite of mine for a long time!

Have a great night!
