Is River a Good Name for a Girl? We think of a dark-haired, beautiful girl ....

  • Yes, River is a beautiful name for a girl.
  • I wouldn't have pegged it as a girl's name, but it would work nicely for a girl.
  • River is OK as a girl's name.
  • River is not a good name for a girl.
  • Silly, don't you know that River can only be a boy's name?!?

If you use River, be sure you watch Firefly, the series, or Serenity, the movie, because there is a character named River on that show, and there are enough people who love the series that will comment on River as a name because of it. It is not necessarily a bad association (especially if you like the show), but she is a very eccentric character.

As I have said before that I know a 6 yr. old (long dark haired girl) named River Meredith who is darling. I love the name myself especially on a girl. They call her Rivie. River Meredith is such a pretty name I think. I say go for it.

I actually really like the name Rivers instead of just River for a girl. It was in the movie "My dog Skip", which I absolutely love ane the little girl that he had a crush on was named Rivers. She was gorgeous and I have loved the name ever since!

Sarah, thank you - we actually watch Firefly and I had forgotten that her name was River! That actually makes me happy since there now is some documentation that a female can be called River. You are right, though, that the character isn't exactly a role model. :-)

Thanks everyone for your comments. The funny thing, I actually think River is a very WEAK name for a boy. I don't know why I like it so much for a girl, and so little for a boy. The other female name I really like is Mesa. I appreciate the person who posted all the other "nature" names but for some reason they don't really click with me. Rain is OK but I don't really like the others. Part of it is that I want a strong name - nothing like Meadow or Flower. Also, thanks for the mention of the 6-year-old River Meredith. If we choose River, it will be River Marie (Marie after my mom). I like the R and then M (and our last name begins with R, so the initials would be RMR).

We love Firefly, and I would totally use River if we needed to choose a name that starts with an R. Funny thing is Meadow is on my short list for girls, because I need a name that starts with M. More likely, though, I'll use Winter as a middle name (Natalia Winter).

Anyhow, it is funny, because my boys' names are not nature names, nor are we particularly nature people, but nature names keep popping up as choices for a girl. Not that it matters, as I'm pretty sure we will end up with 4 boys anyway.

Natalia Winter ... how beautiful. Makes me think of the Chronicles of Narnia (which is definitely a good connotation to me).

I love the name River for a girl, and River Marie is lovely. I, too, have always thought it sounded better as a girl's name than a boy's name. I would like to use it myself, but I'm just not sure if I'm brave enough. :) It may be too far out there for dh.

I hope you use it! That way, at least one of us will! HTH and good luck!
