I've never even heard of Camden NJ, maybe because I'm from the west coast! So I'm not too worried about some city in Jersey.I dont think most people base their decision on a name thats a crime ridden city or not.Kinda the same thing as saying I cant name my daughter Bailey, because thats the name of a lady on deathrow for murder in Texas.Something as ridiculous as that isnt my concern! I think we're going to go with Rylin though, most of my family members like that one best. Rylin Lara Britt. These cant be made up names,if theyre in baby books.sorry. But if people think they are, all the better!I'd rather have a made up name than a played out name. But thankyou for your opinions anyways! They are interesting to read. take care,Jami Lara

Lara is pronounced LAR-UH, not LAIR-UH.I cant stand the sound of LAIR-UH!! It's a spanish last name.It was my great grandmothers lastname, but my mom gave it to me for a middle name.Yeah agree with you. I think I like Rylin better than Camdyn. I like the names of your list too, I saved it! thanks,I'll talk to ya later I hope.-Jami

Yay! I, like you, much prefer Lara (pronounced like Laura) over lair-uh. Yay! This makes me like the name more. Now I really wish you'd use it as the first name! :-) But I know you're tired of hearing that, so I'll come off it!

You and I also agree about the whole Camden, NJ, thing. I have just taken a job as a prosecutor (once I graduate from law school in May), and even though it's probably my business to know things like crime rates in big cities, I would never have associated Camden with the New Jersey city with the highest murder rate. Never, never, never. Not even if you sat me in a room by myself for 100 years and told me to think of everything I could having to do with the word "Camden." I'm thinking this is probably also the case for anyone who will know your baby, given that you live on the West Coast. Therefore, I think that it should not be a factor at all in what you name your daughter.

You still haven't won me over with Rylin. If my choices are Camden or Rylin, then I choose Camden 1000%, but if my choice is Rylin or Camdyn, then I'm wishy-washy. This isn't altogether due to the fact that the spellings seem made-up, either, though that is one objection. Rather, Rylin just seems lop-sided to me...I think I'd like it better if you spelled it Rylan or Ryland, or maybe even Reilan or Reiland. I don't know what difference this makes...it's just personal preference, I guess, but I do think that any of these spellings actually look more feminine. I have this aversion to unnecessary Ys that isn't altogether rational, but I think it trivializes a name and makes it more cutesy, less serious, and less likely to grow with the child.

As for the poster who so adamantly objects to your names, I think it's odd that she's so vehemently opposed to Rylin because it's trendy and alternately spelled, but she's in favor of McKenna. In my area, you just don't get more trendy than all those "Mac" names...McKenzie, McKayla, McKenna, etc., and there are a zillion ways to spell all of them.

Keep us posted as you decide on the final name (especially if you decide that you like one of the names I suggested)! :-)

I don't really like McKenna either...but what it does have going for it is that it is a real name...with a history. I am just not a fan of putting sounds together to "make up" a name...often, when people do this to be original, they end up not being original at all. In fact, I wonder how many kids will end up being named something "unique" but end up feeling completely ordinary,. Ashlyn, Braden, Jaden...etc. They all tend to blend together and lack any real sense of themselves (at least Mckenna has this)...I just think sometimes people shoot themselves in the foot and end up doing exactly what it is they want to avoid...giving their little one a name everyone else has!

And with regard to the New Jersey thing...no, if you live on the west coast, you probably won't make that connection but if your little on ever moves to the east coast, she will. And it's not a real pleasant connection. Sort of like naming your little girl "Detroit."

I really do wish Jami_Lara luck. I think she has some very nice options on her list (to have a pretty name like Lara on your family tree is a gift!) I just hope she sees the power and beauty in that and doesn't feel compelled to make up something better. Because she won't...it won't be prettier or more special than that.

You're sweet, Jami. Law school has been a grind, but it still doesn't seem like it's actually been three years and I'm about to graduate! And move so far from home!

Before I tell you my favorite names, I should warn you that our styles are really different! I like lots and lots of names, but for when I have my own kids, I want to use family names, so that's had an impact on the names you'll see below. I would be interested to know if you like any of these, especially considering how different our tastes are. A name I love would be all the better if it appeals across a broader spectrum, you know?

My first daughter will be named Rosalie Victoria, unless something huge happens between now and then. Rose is a name in my family tree, and Leigh is my best friend's middle name. Victoria is after my middle name (and my mom, whose name is Vicki).

Ruth Caroline is another name that I like. My grandmother's name was Ruth (she passed away just this January), and Caroline is a feminine form of Charles, which is my father's name. I'd call her by both names.

I also will definitely use Cordelia, because it's my grandmother's grandmother's name, and because I just don't think you get a better, more Southern name than Cordelia. I want to call her Cora, or maybe Delie. Funny story, her sister's name was Ophelia (funny, not: Cordelia and Ophelia, but what's even less funny is that they were called Delie and Phelie...can you imagine?). I like Cordelia Cathleen and Cordelia Charlotte (again, feminine form of Charles; Cathleen is just a name I've always loved).

One of my favorite names that I'm not sure I'll be courageous enough to use is India. I just love this name, and it has the Southern connection through Gone With the Wind. My favorite middle name with India (right now) is Whittington, which was my grandmother's mother's maiden name. I also like India Juliette, after my favorite great-aunt, Julia.

For boys, the only names I definitely want to use are Horace and Nathaniel. Horace was my grandfather's name (I know it's old-fashioned, but it means a lot to me, and I'll likely use it as his middle name). Nathaniel is after my mother's grandfather, Nathan. I have bad associations with the name Nathan, but I think Nathaniel is great, with the nickname Nate. I also love Ezekiel, nicknamed Zeke, but people tend to have a negative reaction to it. If it were a family name, I wouldn't care about the negativity, but since it's not, I probably won't use it.

Obviously, I want lots of babies...biological or adopted, I don't care. Congratulations on your baby girl, and don't forget to let us know your final decision! Good luck to you!

I too am from the West and I have really enjoyed the conversation thus far. I was really surprised that what is concidered "trendy" to one is very natural and pretty to another. I guess that's good. Here in the West there are so many Isabelle's (or elle's),Ava's, Lily's, Clairs, Grace's and so on that when I hear something more original (not strange or wierd) that it's almost a breath of fresh air. Granted I love some of the old names too but I think there is room for all. That's what makes this process of choosing names so enjoyable. When I hear a name such as Camden, I see it for the name not the associations unless it has a vulgar or unacceptable association. There are so many wonderful names out there and I keep adding them to my list. I have been complemented on the names that I have given my children except by some on this board. But that's great because I enjoy hearing the opinions in other areas. I do like originality.

Some of the names I like are

Deveri
Koriel
Kaisley
Brinley
Audra - Audralyn
Avareigh
Kenzington
Aubriana
Raleigh
Jentrey
Bridget
Kendall (here in my area this is usually a boy but I like it for a girl too)
Brielle
Chandler
Breiton
Cambra or Cambree
Sheridan
McKaye

And that's just a few of the ones that I have gleaned from this area. Keep in touch and let me know what you decide. I Love the name Rylin (Lara or Mckenna) so you go for it!!
I have a daughter Makenna Danielle and we sometimes call her Kenna. When I named her that I didn't even know another one but now I've heard it some. That just means that people like her name! Please let us know how thing go. I'd love to hear from you again.

I'm not going to comment on your names because they are NMSAA, but I did want to say something about the comment I've pasted above. I'm originally from Chicago. My great-great grandparents moved there and every generation lived in Chicago without giving leaving the area any thought. Yet I moved to Boston. My sister moved to Ohio and then to Tennessee. Her son is finishing college and is literally looking for a job all over the country. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't think that just because you live on the west coast your daughter won't end up on the east coast. And yes, if she moves here people will see her name and either think of a dirty filthy city in NJ or a quaint town in Maine. A little farther south from Boston and they will only think of NJ.

BTW - When you ask for an opinion you shouldn't call those requested opinions "ridiculous." If you only wanted postivie feedback you should have stated that in your original post. People here are brutally honest because that is what most people expect.

But in the end you should name your baby a name that you and your DH love.

Honetly, even I have herd of that yucky new jersey city, but I dont think anyone could make the association when your using some a girly spellin like camdYn, especialy on a girl. I liked Camdyn Makena the best.
