Family names are great -- both our boys have family names -- but, there's no harm or problem in introducing NEW family names to the mix! If there are some other names that you love for some reason -- meaning, association, etc. -- please use them!

I love useing family names. Catherine has been in our family as far as we know 10 generations. My middle name is Catherine but when it came to nameing my daughter she we have such a long last name I wanted to shorten it to Cate. I might use a family name with #2 but if I find another name I like better I'll use it.

I always use family names as MIDDLE names only. I pick names I like for the first name.

I remember a conversation I had a few years ago with a couple nieces and nephews talking about what the new baby's name might be. To come to the point, one of my nieces who has a beautiful name, but not a family name, was disappointed and bothered that she didn't have a family name. She is one out of 4 siblings, and the only one who doesn't have one. If I never heard her talk about it I wouldn't think it mattered. But now I think if you started using family names than be consistent with the rest.
