I was going to use Lily as my DD's MN. My grandmother's FN was Lena and, since I'm Jewish, I needed an "L." My FIL's mother was also Lilly. I liked the Lily spelling much better though. I asked FIL if he would mind me changing the spelling. He told me that his mother had always hated Lilly since it was actually the last name of the family minister. She had never felt that it was a "real" name and always regreted that her name was not Lillian, or at the very least Lily (with one L). FIL asked me to please use "Lillian" instead of Lily/Lilly. I did that.
Ever since then (almost 8 years now) I've been paying attention to the Lily/Lilly spellings. What I've noticed is that Lily (one L) is usually a FN and Lilly is almost always a LN.
I chose Lily for our DD.
