This one's not unisex, but I won't give it away and spoil the results of the poll. ;)

I'm fairly sure I know which sex it is for. I could see it on both, though. I'm kinda liking it. :)

Oh, I agree. I've always liked Tegan (although many assumed it was a typo for the unisex name Teagan LOL). I actually love that too ... different origin/meaning though. Very nice name. ;)

I know a boy (tee-gan). Not sure it being a girl name even if it does rhyme with Megan.

Sounds like the boy you know may have a misspelling of Teagan, which can be pronounced tee-gan. Terra's right ... Tegan really is "tay-gan."

Hmm, I always thought Tegan was prounounced tee-gan, because of the Dr. Who character by that name. Were they wrong, or is tay-gan the Americanized pronunciation?

Neither. The Doctor Who character was named for the daughter of an Australian friend of the producer, so it is highly likely that either

a) this is a seperate AUSTRALIAN pronunciation and origin (nothing Americanized about it), or even simply the parents' chosen/alternate/incorrect pronunciation of the Welsh name. Parents have been known to misspell or mispronounce the name they've chosen for their child, after all. LOL

or

b) the producer knew the child's name, but not the spelling, and accidentally went with Tegan rather than Teagan (which is perfectly acceptable, as new names or forms of names are often created for literature, movies and television ... not uncommon in the least). In fact, the entire name happened quite by accident, as the producer had two possible names scribbled on a slip of paper and someone saw it and added the name to the official script, thinking that was the name that was to be used. So it's quite likely he didn't even get a chance to check or correct the spelling if his scribbles were misread or if he'd accidentally misspelled it to begin with.

If it helps, the Welsh letter "e" is always short as in "pet" or long like the "a" in "tape." It generally doesn't make the "ee" sound, as tee-gan requires. And you'll notice that Teg-an (short "e" as in "pet") and Tay-gan (long like the "a" in "tape") sound relatively similar, thus following the rule for the Welsh letter "e."

So I read that Tegan is a girl's name. I did know that but just wanted to see what others thought when they heard the name. I do think it could go either way but since it is a girl's name I would only use it on a girl. I really like it but it may be too close to Logan and my nephew is Keagan. Plus I want something more feminine sounding, to my ears, for my girl(s). I think sisters Emera and Tegan don't sound the greatest together eihter. ;)

Yeah, I think Logan and Tegan would be a little close ... and Teagan wouldn't work either with cousin Keagan. ;) Could be a nice mn though (can't remember if you use family names or not ). Emera is great, btw, if I haven't already mentioned it.

Wow, Kelli, I can't believe you know all that! Awesome, thanks!

I guess I shouldn't be taking a sci-fi show as an authority on anything... ;)
