My brother's second son is being delivered tomorrow. Over the weekend I found out the name and was a little suprised when I found out what he picked. The name is Maverick James. Does anyone have an opinion about this name?

No, I didn't "forget" about that movie, forgettable though it was. But did you forget that Maverick is his last name? His first name is Bret. Hence my point in my earlier post that Maverick is a very cute nickname (since I consider calling someone by his last name a nickname of sorts), but that I don't feel it's a very good first name.

That said, Top Gun is one of those movies that I watch every time it comes on television. I love it; I always cry when Goose dies. So no, I don't think Top Gun is a crap movie. But Maverick is not Maverick's given name, either (obviously). I liken naming a child Maverick to naming one Iceman, Jester, or Goose: None of them are names; they're call signs.

I love it. I had thought about it for my own potential son, but want something more traditional.

I really couldn't see this on a grown man. Maybe you want him to be a cowboy or a race-car driver, but what if he wants to be an accountant, IT guy, teacher... anything more ordinary?

I think it would be pretty humiliating for a nerdy or sensitive guy to have to introduce himself as Maverick every day.

How about dialing it down a notch and going with something similar, but less over the top?
