Too Similar? I am considering Eden Abigail for my daughter.....

  • But I have a son named Ian. Are Ian & Eden too similar?
  • Yes - way too confusing
  • Yes similar - but not too terribly confusing
  • No - they sound great together
  • No - but I'd choose something else

Hi-

I love both of the names Ian and Eden. They are pretty close though - you could probably get away with it, but you will probably unintentionally call them by each others names. I have an Alyssa and an Alexa, Alexa was first. I had five names to consider when Alyssa was born, but when she came out with a full head of red hair, none of the names seemed to fit. I have always liked the name Alyssa but was afraid the names were too close. Some family members said they were too close, others thought they were cute sister names. I went ahead and named daughter 2 Alyssa - it was in the back of my mind that they were similar but I never thought I would ever call them by the wrong name.

So far, every family member has mixed up their names more than once. I call them by each others name atleast 3 times a day, often more. I even named a digital photo of Alyssa as Alexa.jpg. I have to be honest and say if I had it to do all over again, I would have chosen something else. It has only been 6 months and I am already so tired of confusing their names - I do really concentrate on getting them right, but it never fails that I slip. The doctors office has pulled the wrong charts, Alyssa gets Alexa's and vice versa.

It might not happen to you since one is a boy and the other a girl. Also, I have been told that parents mix up kids names regardless of how similar or different they are. I just never considered me mixing up the names as a factor when choosing so I thought I would share my experience as something to consider. They do sound adorable together though.......

I really love the name Eden, but Eden and Ian are hard to say together and I think they might have trouble figuring out who you were calling for. Maybe if you plan on using the nn Edie (which I love) and then she can always use Eden when she is older. The part of her life that she spends with daily contact with her brother will not be the majority so it would be a shame to not use the name because of the similar sound.

Thank you for your responses ladies. Gosh I love the combination of Eden Abigail.. sigh. But that long ee sound at the beginning of Ian & Eden really is repetitive, isn't it? And now that I really think about it they are both very short and end with an "n". That is a bit much. sigh ... Well, back to the ole' drawing board. DH probably would have hated it anyway lol

I don't see a problem with it. Many families have chilren whose names begin with the same letter, so why would this be different?

My opinion is that you will mess up your kids' names anyway :-) it is just a mother thing. My kids' names begin with C and Z, and I still mess them up!!

I LOVE Eden! Go for it!!!

BTW, a friend is having a baby in June and is naming her Eden Naomi.

LOL Well, if it's not the name we mess up - it'll be something else lol

I'd never really thought about it as Ian & Eden. I always thought of it as - Deja, Ian, Tyler & Eden. With Tyler in between there it's not so obvious that Ian & Eden are soooo similar in sound.

Eden Naomi is pretty.

Just peeking in here.

I have a dd (2yrs) named Eden AnnMarie.

I don't think Eden and Ian are too similar... Of course my nephew's name is Ayden and my neice's name is Jaden... I get those mixed up.. but rarely.
