I LOVE Adeline, especially with the nickname Addie. It's a beautiful classic that is (blessedly) underused. However, the Y spelling is SO trendy and tired. It seems like everyone is throwing Ys in where they don't belong lately and it has the unfortunate effect of making lovely, classic names look modern and trendy.

Well, the difference is we would call her Adelyn rhyming with "win" not "wine", so Adeline would not be the best way to spell it!

I actually prefer Adeline visually -- it just has a very classic look/feel to me -- but now every time I hear it I can't help but hear the phrase "add a line," like they'd use in a cell phone commercial. ;)

However, ITA with Annie that Adelyn gives the name a much trendier feel than it should rightfully have (what with the whole "Y where it doesn't belong" trend).

Therefore, my humble suggestion would be to consider using the more traditional spelling Adeline, but pronouncing it as Adelyn. After all, -line can be pronounced as line, lyn or even leen, so this shouldn't be too confusing. Caroline, for example, is pronounced by some as Caro-line and others as Caro-lyn, and neither is technically wrong.

HTH ;)

I just replied to your OP, and then saw you'd already responded to Annie about the pronunciation issue.

Just wanted to add that at one point I had Adeline (this spelling) on my own list, and I noticed a lot of people actually DO naturally pronounce this as Adelyn until told differently (I think it was close to half and half). So I really don't think Adeline, pronounced Adelyn, would be a huge issue. ;)

As Kelli said, most people will naturally pronounce Adeline and Adelyn the same way. I've known a couple of girls/women named Adeline in my life, and every one of them pronounced it Add-uh-lin. Never the "line" rhymes with "wine" ending. I think you can use the classic, pretty spelling and still get the pronounciation you want without any problem.

My niece just had a baby a couple of weeks ago and they named her Adelyn Elise which really made my daughter mad because she wanted to use Adelie. I think it's really pretty myself.

Again, why does it make such a big deal to sub in a y for i? It's just whatever makes you and your dh happy. We chose to use the y in Madisyn, because we loved the name, but now how it's looks written. We call her Madi, and we get compliments all the time. HTH!

I'm not here to debate this or anything, but wanted to point out that the reason I personally don't care for misspelling a name that has a well-known, established spelling is that it often changes the entire name. Some names do work with either an I or Y (although usually this only applies when concerning the end of a name ... my own mother spelled my name Kelli, after all) and actually have established male/female versions using this to differentiate. However, it's when Ys are used to replace any random vowel (or even inserted where no letter is necessary) that things get complicated. After all, Addysyon (we've seen this one more than once LOL) just doesn't look like Addison ... it reads as A-dee-see-on.

So by changing the spelling, you are changing the name. Your own example of Madisyn is interesting, actually, because although I know this is a kre8iv version of Madison, I would not read or pronounce it the same. A Y simply cannot make the same sound an O does, so this is not Mad-i-SON ... it is Mad-i-SIN. It's just different.

I'm not sure if this was part of your reasoning for doing so, and if it was that's your prerogative, but you have to realize not everyone will see this as Madison, KWIM?

HTH
