Can you tell me what you think of the name Skylar for a girl? Have you ever known any? DH and I had narrowed it down to two names, but this morning over coffee he brought up that name..I actually think its pretty, and wouldnt mind the nn Sky. What do you think?

I've never met anyone named Skylar, but I like it for a girl. It is one of the unisex names that I prefer for girls over boys. I've liked it since I watched Anne of Green Gables as a kid and saw one of the actresses names was Schuyler. Minnie Driver played a character named Skylar in Good Will Hunting.

Thanks for your response, yeah, I think "Good Will Hunting" is where DH came up with the name. We both love that movie, so it would make sence. And I dont know anyone with that name either, thats actually one of the reasons that I am even considering it.. Its so hard picking a girl name for some reason.. either they are totally commen and you hear them all the time or I love the "name", but dislike the nn that I know it will eventually be shortened to by her school friends - ie. Gabrielle (Gabby)..OH well, we will see! Thanks again.

Love it. I've never known any Skylars, but it's always been a favorite name of mine.

A friend of mine has a little girl named Skylar and I think it is a very nice name. I like it better than your other choices of Jordan and Avery.

I've always thought Skylar was so pretty. I like the nn Sky/Skye too. I've never known a Skylar and only heard of an aquaintance's child named Skylar about ten years ago. Great choice!

I've never known anyone named Skylar, so I'm not biased either for or against it, but it always strikes me as a "Cabbage Patch Kid" name -- something you name your doll when you're nine or ten because you think it's cool or sounds pretty, but not a name you'd really end up using in the long run.

It also seems one of those trendy Hollywood names you'd see used in movies or on TV on a person too old to have been named according to that particular trend (like when you see a middle-aged woman named Nevaeh or Jadon and just kind of roll your eyes at the writers LOL). I remember thinking exactly that when I saw Minnie Driver's character from Good Will Hunting was named Skylar. It just didn't fit her at all, and seemed very odd at the time. Great movie, but that's always bugged me a bit.

FWIW, I do think Schuyler is a great way to honor your Dutch heritage, and if I were introduced to a child named for this reason it probably wouldn't hold these same associations for me. It's just when the name is used for no reason other than that it sounds cool or offers the nn Sky that it seems this way, KWIM?

Hi! I have known one person with that name my whole life. I like the name alot and say "Go for it." It is not common and has a soft femine sound to it. Good luck and best wishes. Bye

Ok, I'm going to try to tell you what I think without being offensive. About a year ago, I was up late flipping channels on tv and I came across one of those shows that's only on late at night. It was Jenny McCarthy sitting around with a lot of other tacky-looking girls all talking in their underwear (weird, I know). I figured out after about 10 seconds that these were strippers with Jenny and they were trying to come up with her stripper name. They threw a lot of names at her, while sort of giggling and swaying around and when she heard one of them say "Skylar" she said, "That's it! That's what I want my stripper name to be!!!" It was then that I changed the channel.

Now, there may be lots of highly educated, well-heeled young women named Skylar out there but for me, it will always be linked to that tacky late-night girlie romp.
