Can you tell me what you think of the name Skylar for a girl? Have you ever known any? DH and I had narrowed it down to two names, but this morning over coffee he brought up that name..I actually think its pretty, and wouldnt mind the nn Sky. What do you think?

It is okay.... not really my style as I prefer more classy, elegant names, but it's not horrible. I find it a bit juvenile sounding.

ETA that I have only known one, but he was a boy (about age 18 now)

Two years ago I was on my fourth year of teaching: first kindergarten, then 3 year old preschoolers, then 1-2 year old's.
I encountered 1 Sklyer as a boy
and FIVE Skyler, Skylar's as girls.
I also went to high school with a make Skyler.
I've met 3 Skylars, I think, all girls. One, spelled Schuyler, is the daughter of two college friends who named her after our dorm (where they met). The other two Skylars were patients at the N Dallas practice I managed. Interestingly enough, they were the younger sisters of older girls named Jordan and Avery!
I don't hate Skylar, but it's not my favorite unisex name. To me, it lacks the strength and calm self-assuredness posessed by Jordan, Avery, Morgan, Taylor, et al. I'm not sure why I perceive this difference, but Skylar has always struck me as a less than classy choice.
I know 4 girls named Sky - one is about 4 or 5 years old and her name is Skylar, but I'm not sure if it ends in er or ar - one, who is probably about 25 is named Schuyler, which is kind of odd, the other two are Skye by itself and Skye as a middle name to something really old-fashioned and formal as a first name, but she uses her middle.
I have come across a handful of boys named Skyler - I think it's about even up as far as being unisex
it's one I like a little, which is unusual for me, because I don't care for many unisex names - Peyton/Payton is the other one I do like and for either gender
good luck
We named our daughter Skylar Grace who's 19 months. my husband loved the name from good will hunting. at the time i never heard of the name so i liked how it wasn't over used or too popular. to this day i don't know anyone with that same name. i've gotten many compliments on it.
We're expecting another baby in a few months and i am trying to come up with a girl's name that has the same criteria. not too used but just as pretty. i think we may go with the name Mallory if it's a girl.
i don't believe in all that "it's not professional" stuff. Everything has a way of working out. but that's just me. i think it's a great name but i'm partial for obvious reasons :)
Good luck!
Kim
