I totally agree with you, but that is the main problem with our only other boy's name, William. Hayes was almost William but I decided that it was too risky since I did not like any of the nn's for it. When we mentioned it when people asked what names we liked, I heard so many Billy comments, I realized that no matter what I think and dislike, people are going to push their boundries. I still like William and until a few weeks ago and we saw that movie, it was the only boy name on our list. Since, I'm not sure I can handle the nn's I realized that I better be okay with the nn's for Abram as well. Its hard when a name has such an established nn. You seemed to do okay with Aila though, so I'm sure it can work. Plus if he would decide to go by a nn himself, I would have to be okay with that too. And Abe or Bram is much better for me than Bill or Billy.
That's so odd! I would NEVER assume a nn for a name like William, that has so many (not that I would assume a nn to begin with, but you KWIM) ... Will, Willy, Bill, Billy, Liam, etc. There's no way someone should just pick one and decide to randomly use it!
I think it's harder with a name like Abigail, which has a very dominant nn it seems nearly every Abigail uses. There's Gail, of course, and Aila, which I'm sure at least ONE other Abigail uses , but people definitely tend to assume she's just another Abby. Sigh. If you read my very-long post in the rants and raves section, however, you already know the latest in that saga. LOL
Long story short, I think Abram or William -- with no nns -- could be enforced fairly easily. Abram's uncommon and short enough that I wouldn't suspect most would try to call him anything else without hearing you do so first (although it helps that you do like Bram ... even if dh isn't sure about it, names tend to grow on men more easily I think LOL), and William has so many nns, not to mention so many little Williams who go by their full name, that I can't believe many would automatically call him Billy IRL (maybe just people giving you a hard time?? People enjoy doing that with names you love LOL).
FWIW, I'm with you on that one ... I actually know a William that goes by Billy (he's five), and he is SOOO not a Billy. William definitely. Will maybe. Billy ... never! ;)

This is so true they may have been pushing my buttons, people are just down-right weird sometimes. That said, most people couldn't believe that I would prefer William, I heard "that's so formal" "that's so grown up" "What about Will?" "Are you sure you don't like Billy?"
My answers were always "that's what I like about it," "Will is okay, but children do not need to come out of the womb with a nn", and "Yes I'm sure Billy does not suit my sytle" Plus the association to Bill Clinton is not exactly what I would want to strap an innocent child with (his economic and political side not withstanding)
