I would assume that Nico was a boy, but if I discovered "he" was actually a she, I wouldn't be all that surprised. I'm one of the posters who mentioned being familiar with the singer Neko Case.

I would actually assume it was a nickname for Nicole or Nicola. I think Nico is adorable, but you might want to consider giving her a full name so that she doesn't have to explain her gender all the time and just so she has more options. I always prefer a longer version shortened to a nickname when possible. I know a lot of people who wish they had more options, but no one who has ever hated having a full name and a nickname. Besides that, I simply adore Nicola. I think it's one of the most beautiful names I've ever heard. Nicola Catherine is spectacular. And you could still call her Nico all the time and introduce her at school and such as Nico. But that way if anyone ever says, "But that's a boys name!" or if she goes to Italy where it could be a serious problem, she can just say, "Oh, it's short for Nicola" and that would be the end of the issue.

Good suggestion, Annie. I, too, like Nicola.

I don't think anyone was claiming that their real names were Nico or Neko. But that is what they are called and people are becoming familiar with those names. Many, many performers use stage names and the fact that they are "aren't real" doesn't stop thousands of parents every year from being inspired to name their children similarly. (Just look at huge popularity of Reese for a girl, spurred by Reese Witherspoon -- or should I say, Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon.)

As I said in my other post, I think Nico would be best as a nickname for Nicole or Nicola. But regardless, I don't think arguing that these women aren't actually named Nico/Neko is going to make much difference. The name on their birth certificate means little compared to how they are known by their fans.

I agree wholehartedly to this. I have friends who were given very nicknamey sounding names (Carrie, Jenny, Shelly) and wished that they had a longer, formal name. But none of the people I who use a nn for a longer name hate their full name. Naming your dd Nicola Jospehine or Nicola Eleanore and using the nn Nico exclusively would be a much better idea IMO. Good luck!

With that abundance of absolutely fabulous family names, I'd have a hard time not getting rid of the gender-bending Nico and using two of them instead. Catherine, Josephine, Eleanore, and Rebecca are gorgeous. And if you're not sold on using a family name as a first name, well, you can't get much prettier than Isobel. I know you're taking a lot of heat about Nico and I feel badly about adding to it; but seriously, it's a great boy name...just not so much on a girl. Rebecca Josephine may be one of the prettiest names I've heard in a while, and it has the added benefit of sounding a little different than lots of the names we're hearing now. I also like Josephine Rebecca. Or really, any name you could create using the five names on your middle name list...I love all of them!

Count me on the list that thought Nico would be for a boy, however, if once I learned you were considering it for a girl's name I thought it was very nice and different.

I love the combination of Nico Catherine with Catherine sounding like a very feminine name to me.

I'm sorry but I agree with majority. Nico is all boy to me. I was considering using it as a nn for Nicolas or Dominic for my son. I also know two boys named Nicolas nn Nico. Why not call her Nicole, Nicolette nn Nico. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks so much for all the feedback- I just wanted to throw in another two cents for your consideration...while I think that Nicola and Nicolette are in fact really good alternatives, I associate those with Nicolette Sheridan, whom I can't stand, and this terrible girl I went to school with named Nicola.
DH and I are so up in the air on this- we love, love, love Nico, even though neither one if us is big on boys names for girls. Usually I'm the first one to object if I think a name is too masculine for a girl. My sister and I had a huge disagreement when she had a daughter and wanted to name her Reagan. I'm still not crazy about that, but now at least I can justify it to myself by saying, "If Nico hates her boys name, she can rant about it with her cousin."
Or this could all be a moot point- we could be having a boy. Thankfully, we already picked a nice boys name that couldn't concievably be female. I hope.

I have reserved comment through all of this because I also feel that Nico is 100% boy & better left as a nn for a girl.
