Hello.

Congrats on expecting.

This board, while being my favorite, also tends to be quite traditional.

Whether any of us would use the name Nico on a girl is not in question! I don't recall your asking for our opinions, either. However, now after reading all the negative feedback, I am compelled to give my opinion

Ginger,

I think you summed it up perfectly, I have not commented about this name to the op, but when I read your post, I thought, perfect. I have always thought to myself, boys names for girls is not anything new, even though when I find a boy name I love, I am guilty of saying, please don't let this one go to the girls! But in reality all names probably have been used for girls atleast once, I just didn't have the data to back it up like you do. I did however go to high school with girls named: Micheal, Brady, Riley ect...

Thanks for the post

Michelle

You are so right Ginger, but I will literaly CRINGE if I ever hear Weston on a girl, I just can't help it! Even though I know it is wrong to feel that way, I still will (at least I can admit it).

Just chiming in to say I agree 100%. I really could not care less about whether the names I choose for my boys might someday be "girl" names. I like certain names and I like them for certain genders, regardless of usage. (I adore Kelly, Ashley and Casey for boys, but would never consider them for girls. I will use Graham for my daughter despite some HEAVY criticism that I was "stealing" a boy's name.) I think the world would be a better place if the idea of a boy having a "girl name" wasn't so stigmatized. (I'll spare you my rant on gender politics.)

And I do think being from the South plays a part in this mindset. Surnames are surnames. They don't belong to genders, they belong to families. It doesn't bother me one bit to see a girl name Carter or Logan or Ryan or Spencer. Those aren't boy's names, they are family surnames. Anyone who gets in a huff about girls "stealing" those names needs to think about that.

In this specific case, I suggested using Nico as a nn for Nicola because I love those names and think it's generally better to give children a full name so they can opt to use either the full name or the nickname later in life. But since the original poster has come back and said she specifically ruled out Nicola due to a personal association, then I'd say Nico is fine on its own. I like it a lot, actually.

I'm really liking it too, sorry to say, for all the parents of little boys named Nico out there.

Annie, I'm sure you and I could talk for days about why little girls need strong names too...Or why cross-gender names shouldn't create such a stir. You bring out a very good point as well. I almost went into my full-blown explanation of how most names that have "gone to the girls" are really surnames anyway. Since it didn't exactly apply to Nico, I left it out. But you are correct. I get annoyed when someone advises an expectant parent against a surname because it's a boy name or a last name...

I also would like to add, now that you have addressed me, that I loved your suggestion of Nicola. It's one of my all-time favorites too and rather overlooked, in general.

One other thing to point out- though I tend to view names on criteria other than gender- once I evaluate a name, I usually form a strong opinion on which gender I would USE it for - but this does not affect the suggestions I make to other parents.

Graham for a girl is fabulous! In fact, I love Graham for a boy, but I do believe I like Graham and Garrett better for girls!

Oh, those Southern roots do reveal themselves, don't they? LOL

Later,

Ginger
