When you hear the name Lorelei, does it carry sinister or negative associations?

  • Yes it definitely does. I wouldn't use it.
  • Not at all. Use it!
  • Somewhat , but it shouldn't deter you from using it.
  • Other (please elaborate)

Only people familiar with mythology will have any sort of negative reaction to it...the problem is, the more educated a person, the more likely it will be they will be aware of Lorelei's negative image (luring sailors to their death isn't exactly a sweet conotation). But if you love it, and if you don't mind this historical/mythological association go for it (although i still vote for Miranda).

My only bad association with Lorelei is that it was the name of a not-so-nice girl in my dorm freshman year of college. Other than that, I think it's an okay name. ;-) I do prefer Miranda, though.

Unfortunately, DH has nixed Miranda. Although I really like the name, I wasn't keen on how it flowed with our ln anyway, so I'm not devastated. As of right now, I think we're down to Lorelei, Lily or Emily. He likes Emily the best, but I think it's too popular plus I have some negative associations with the name. He likes Lorelei next and then probably Lily. It seems like the latter is becoming really popular too, though.

I do not have any negative thoughts about the name Lorelei, I only think of that show the Gilmore Girls. I think it is really pretty.
