I had posted a poll previously with my final four; however, after much thought, my dh and I have narrowed it down to our two favorite first names. My dh's top pick now is Kali and mine is Ella, so maybe if we combine them then we would both win with Kali Ella (as long as it doesn't sound too awful). Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Ella is VERY popular, especially since it can be a nn for so many other names (so it's hard to judge how common it really is, KWIM?). Still, it's much more appealing than Kali, which just looks like it's missing something if that makes sense. I think you mentioned in another post that Kali was the name of the place you were married or something to that extent, however, and you can't do much about the spelling in that case. ;)
Kali Ella as a combo doesn't sound quite right to me for some reason -- probably all the prominent L sounds (-li runs into El- runs into -la, not to mention the similar -li/-la endings of each name). But perhaps you could find a compromise in Calla? Nearly an exact combination of the sound elements in the names: Kali + Ella = Calla. ;) That would be lovely, and could easily be considered "for" where you were married (so you still have that link and a great story behind the name).

I think Calla is very pretty; however, my maiden name was Callaway and so I feel like when I say Calla that I need to finish it up with -way since I am so used to Callaway. Does that make sense? Also, last night I started to look up Kali on the web and found that it is a Hindu goddess of dissolution and destruction and then they showed a picture of her. It kind of changed the cutsey-ness of the name for me and I am not sure if I can still use the name after reading that info. Here is the link in case anyone is interested in looking at it too:

So, now either my dh has to agree on Ella or else we are back to square one. With less than six weeks to go, this has gotten to be so difficult. We were set on Bailey Kathryn w/ Bailey being my grandmother's maiden name and Katherine being my dh's great-grandmother's name, but then I started to have serious doubts w/in the past month or so but just kept pushing them aside until a few days ago. I just don't think I can use Bailey anymore (which I have loved since I was like 12!) It seems these days to be too much of a dog's name and also I am leaning towards a very pretty, feminine name moreso than a unisex name at this point. Now, all that could change next week - ha ha! I just hope I am making the right decision and won't regret changing it from Bailey after she is born. But, I have loved Ella for a while now and I am okay with its popularity. I guess if it is a good name then it will probably peak in popularity at some point. Plus, I can't seem to get away from popular names...when I named my son Ethan it wasn't that popular and then my other son we named Caden as a longer version of Cade (which I knew a Cade growing up) and then that peaked in popularity. So, needless to say, the popularity of a name doesn't really deter me these days.
Now, if only I can convince my dh to use Ella.... (and be happy about it!)

Wow! It seems you may have already decided here, but I just have to say that the fact that Calla can literally be taken from your maiden name would make me MORE apt to want to use it, not less. I understand how it might seem awkward when you first consider it, wanting to add the final syllable and all, but that would quickly pass I'd imagine. Also, it would offer the nn Callie without the whole nasty-goddess association, and Calla is a type of Lily and can mean "beauty" (if that doesn't scream feminine I don't know what does). ;)
Speaking of which, since you said you were "leaning towards a very pretty, feminine name moreso than a unisex name at this point," I was wondering ... have you considered Callista? It's very feminine and means "most beautiful," would honor both your maiden name AND the place you were married (if you wanted to use the nn Callie), and the nn Ella wouldn't be too far a stretch in the least! It would also avoid using an overly-popular or unisex name, which you don't seem to want, even though either nn would be an option for you. You could even use Bailey or another family name (dh's grandmother's name or g-grandmother's mn, maybe?) in the middle.
Just a thought! ;)

Great advice! So, I tried to talk my dh into Calla or Callista, both of which he shot down w/o a second thought (can you say FRUSTRATING). So after a heated name discussion, we are at a complete standstill. I like Kali, but not that spelling. He is stuck on that spelling or Cali (which looks like we are naming her after California - so I am not on board with that one), so I started to think what about Kalle? I am big on spelling names like they sound and not trying to be fancy with the spellings, so is Kalle (which would be pronounced just like Halle but of course with a K sound)a stretch for the name? Or do you think it would work? It looks pretty, but I am not sure if people would pronounce it right. Any thoughts on that one...
Thanks so much!

Hmm ... while I get the Kalle, like Halle, thing, I think the problem is that most people are familiar with Halle and it's pronunciation (if nothing else, thanks to Halle Berry), but they won't make the same association with Kalle ... at least until you tell them to. You'll probably get a lot of Kal or Kale (long a) pronunciations instead, and it will almost definitely be spelled Callie by anyone not seeing it in writing, KWIM?
What about some sort of compromise? Try presenting him with Calista (also a valid spelling), nn Cali. ;) The spelling he likes is right there in the name and you get the beautiful, feminine name you want (and really, as long as it's a nn, the Cali/California thing could be ignored, although I totally agree with you if it were the given name). Think he'd go for it?

I'm afraid people wouldn't pronounce Kalle right and it could
