Kelli & Jazz,
I completely agree about the spelling of Kalle, and I certainly don't want for her to grow up having to correct everyone on how her name is pronounced. Sooo, I tried again with Calista, but he says when he hears that name all he thinks of is Calista Flockhart and so he will not use Calista or Callista or any other spelling of it. I think I have the pickiest and most opinionated husband in the world! He even shot down Lily Kate which I love soooo much and refuses to even consider the name Lily?!?! I finally out of frustration said that I am just going to pick the first name, which my top choice at this point is Ella, and he can pick whatever middle name he wants (which does scare me quite a bit, but I feel that might be the only way we will be able to compromise on the name). It has been exhausting researching names only to have 99.9% of them shot down. Men, I swear :-)!
Thanks so much for the opinions and suggestions for Calla and Calista. If only I could just pick the name, I would totally use one of them! Oh well, hopefully, we will come to some sort of compromise like I mentioned above and be settled on the name before her big debut or else her name might really be Baby Girl - yikes!!!
Thanks again!
Laura
Jazz - That is too funny about your friend's child! I am sure if my daughter is anything like me, she would probably insist on the same thing.
Okay, so after I just posted my last message, I did some more research and found a few other ways to spell Kali that my dh MIGHT agree on. I will throw out there the spelling of Kallie since he has already shot down every other variation of Calla, Kalla, Calista, etc. I think that is a cute spelling and it shouldn't be mispronounced. He does not like the double-L and prefers for it to start with a 'K', but it is either that or I am just going to go with Ella - ha!
Before though I bring it up with him, I would love to get ya'lls opinions on the spelling Kallie.
Thanks!
Laura
Update: Okay, so I couldn't wait and ended up presenting my dh with Kallie and Callie. I just told him that it was either one of these or I am for surely going with Ella. He actually didn't shoot either one of them down. I actually think I am liking Callie better than Kallie since that is the "typical" spelling. Plus, when I looked up Callie it is Greek in origin and means Beautiful which is nice! WDYT????

Yes, he is soooo picky! The funny thing is that we didn't have all that much trouble with our boys' names. We had Ethan Andrew picked out before we were even pregnant with him and then Caden was picked out way before I knew what I was having. It was actually harder for me to convince him to use his name which is Matthew for the middle name for Caden - go figure! But, eventually, he came around on that one. He still, though, wishes he had used Brody :-)!
Ella would be the safest bet. Do you by chance like Callie (especially since my maiden name was Callaway) better than Kallie or should I still just go with Ella?
Thanks!
Laura
Kallie still looks a bit off to me ... Callie is much better, but still too nicknamey IMO. I'd keep looking for a formal name you might both like or just settle on Ella (although I understand how frustrating that can feel -- you don't want to simply "settle," KWIM? ).
I did a quick search for you -- and I'm not familiar with some of these, but I threw them in anyway -- maybe your dh will like one of these Cali/Callie names??
Calanthe (ka-LAN-thee)
Calantha
Callia
Callidora
Calliope (ka-LIE-o-pee)
Caltha
Calida/Callida
Callan
Callula
Caroline
Or, if you're definitely leaning more toward Ella but the popularity concerns you, you could also look into one of the many less-common names that can be a nn for. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions! I really love Ella and am completely content with its popularity. It is just that my dh isn't too fond of it, so I was trying to find a compromise with Callie, etc. since he loves Kali. Maybe, though, we will just go with Ella, and he can pick whatever middle name he wants. Then, I guess, we would both "win" in that case. But, who knows! Gosh, this is hard!!!
I will definitely let you all know what the final verdict is (that is, of course, if it doesn't change again before she comes :-)!
Thanks,
Laura

But I would probably just stick with Ella, if you are having doubts, don't do it. I had my daughters name picked out and wanted to spell it different, I got so much flack that I spelled it the traditional way "Taylor". I hated it so much, I had a hard time writing it and even regretted naming her "Taylor". When she was over a year old, I finally went back to the courts and changed the spelling of her name to what I wanted, "Teighlor". I love it now and it has been 13yrs.
I do like Callie quite a bit and I think that's the best spelling for the name.
