It's a family surname. I didn't just make it up... :-)

I wouldn't give Whittington to a child

If I were going to use Whittington, I'd use it as a mn, rather than a first. It sounds heavy as a fn, and if you really think about it, rather snobby/prep school. As a mn it works beautifully (and lends a very nice air of authenticity), for either a boy or a girl.

Ex:

Thomas Whittington
Robert Whittington
James Whittington
Paul Whittington

Elizabeth Whittington
Sara Whittington
Charlotte Whittington
Anna Whittington

I actually like Whittington a lot for a boy, even though it does sound very prep school. (But then snobby prep school names are my guilty pleasure.)

While I usually hate the last name as a first name thing, I really like it when it's a family name. Then it means something. My BIL's MN is Warwick (pronounced the British way of Warick), which is a family name. Everyone calls him "Rick" which is the family NN for Warwick. As Annie said, Whit would make a cute NN for a boy.
