Would you still use your favorite name if a friend (lives nearby) used it first?

Here's my reason for asking just in case you're interested. :)

My vote is still to use Christian Scott but dh is holding on to Ethan (although willing to use my name if I really want to). Some fairly close friends who we see on a weekly basis have a three month old baby whose mn is Ethan but he goes strictly by Ethan. I told dh that it would be weird for us to use Ethan since we have so much contact with these friends and they are calling their son the same name. He says it doesn't matter, and we should use it anyway. WDYT?

I am really wierd about names and won't even consider a name that someone I have gotten to know on IV used on their child. lol Without me being wierd though I think that is just oo close. If it was a friend you only saw once or twice a year I would say it didn't matter too much but since you see this friend on a weekly basis I think it would be too wierd.

If I really loved a certain name, then I would absolutely use it, even if my best friend who lives next door used it, even if my sister used it, etc. In my family, we have several same-name close relatives, and no one has ever had an issue with it. Usually it was 100% clear from the context which one we were talking to or about; if not, we'd use a nickname or middle name (e.g., Mike, or Michael James). I guess if 8 or 10 of my close friends all used the same name, I might choose something else, because there is a point of ridiculousness. But my experience shows me that two kids sharing a name is just not a big deal, even if they live on the same street, go to the same school, same class, and so on.

It's different if what you really want is variety. In that case, you should definitely choose something else. But don't give up on a name because of some idea of name confusion. That whole concept is so exaggerated, it's not even funny.

I agree with Jazz. I voted no, and I stand by that after reading your follow-up, but my general response is maybe.

I wouldn't personally WANT to use the same name a friend used, no matter how much I loved it, but I could see doing so if it was the name of a beloved grandfather or something along those lines.

Ethan is popular, so you'd have to expect to know at least one, but it being someone you'd see so frequently would definitely rule it out for me. And if it were a more unusual name, I'd be even LESS inclined to use it after a friend already had. If I was close friends with the mother of a little girl named Devanie, for example, it's pretty likely I wouldn't also have one (though I'm glad I do). ;)

This is exactly what I try to explain to dh, but he doesn't understand! He isn't into names like I am, and he has no concept of popularity, etc. If it were up to him, we would use Emily and Ethan - two of the most popular names in America. He just doesn't understand why it's a big deal that our child not be one of the many Ethan's and Emily's in their class or why it's important not to use a name a friend has already chosen. *exasperated*
