Would you use the name if.....

Would you use the name if it was already used in your family??? I have a cousin, who is at least 20 years younger than me with the name of Evan. That is a name that I have loved for years, and was so bummed when it was used. I see this cousin maybe once a year, and sometimes not even that.

Now, I don't think we will use the name, but it made me wonder if others would use it.

One more note, Evan's Mom (my Aunt)can be pretty weird sometimes and I am not sure how she would react if we would use the same name. (Another reason why I think we couldn't use it.)

But what do you gals think??
Again, I don't think this name is even in the running, just want opinions from other people.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'd totally use it. I don't think that people own names and unless this is someone you see frequently and there is going to be confusion (which it doesn't sound like this is the case at all) I really don't see why it's a problem.

The only way I wouldn't use it would be if, say, it was a cousin I saw rather regularly AND didn't get along with. If it was a favorite cousin I saw all the time, I would look at it as an honor (and they would be likely to as well). If it was a cousin I saw maybe once a year, as you've mentioned, I wouldn't think twice about it. I mean, how often will it even come up? We were actually in a similar situation when naming our second daughter, Devanie, because I have a young cousin named Devin. However, because she lives in another state and we hardly ever see each other in person, we decided it wasn't that big a deal. (And, by the way, being a typical pre-teen girl, she thinks it's great that the baby was "named after her" ... even if she really wasn't lol). :)

I would use it. If you don't see him, I don't think it would matter. How about Ethan? Its similar, and even nicer IMO.

In my family, the same names are used all the time and no one cares at all! It's quite weird actually! On my mom's side, I have two cousin Sarah's, their moms are sisters. On my dad's side I also have a cousin Sarah. Here are some other names on my mom's side that are used at least twice (or more!) Donald/Donnie/Donna, Mary, Charles, Steven/Stephanie, Ricky, Alex/Alexis, Nicole/Nicholas, Doris, Jean, Dean, and there's more I can't think of right now.

If it's a name you've always loved and even if it isn't, you should use it. The Mom may be honored and not insulted. Even if she is insulted... she'll get over it.

If your family is large, I don't see any problem with recycling names. In my husband's family there are 2 Madelines already and I am thinking about making my baby the third.
