I've been thinking that I'd like to give my maiden name to one of my children whether it's a boy or girl. But I just got to thinking...maybe I could give all of my children 2 middle names. And for each one the 2nd mn would be my maiden name. DF and I talked about how we think it's a bit silly that only the father's last name is passed on. We think that matrilineal naming makes more sense. He even said he'd consider taking my last name when we marry! I don't want to do something that out of the norm. I want to take on DF's name as my last name and make my maiden name a 2nd middle. so, I think it would be a nice tradition for my children to have my maiden name as a 2nd middle and DF's last name. Then maybe they will carry on that tradition. I think it works better than doing hyphenated last names because then what if the child with a hyphenated last name wants to do the same thing with their children? You'd end up with people with 4 last names! lol :P

What do you all think about this? Good idea? Anyone give their children 2 middle names or have 2 middle names themselves? If so, have you encountered any problem with this?

My older dd has 2 middle names. We thought for sure she was going to be a boy, and were calling her Ryan from conception :) Then we found out she was a girl- and had serious pg complications. The specialists didn't know if she would survive to be born. The name Ryan seemed really special to us at that point- we had been calling her that for several months, and given the circumstances, we just couldn't give it up. So it's one of her 2 middle names. Hasn't been a problem yet, but she's only 4.5yo. Our younger dd only has 1 middle name- we just didn't find any need for her to have 2. This little pea on the way might have one or two depending on the gender. If it's a boy, he'll have my dad's name as one of the MN. If it's another girlie, we'll stick with 1 MN, probably. Have fun deciding!

Brandi~ mommy to Kaylee(4yo in a Husky), Lexi(21mo rf in a Wizard) and little pea on the way, due 4/30/05

I never liked the two middle name idea. Overkill, plus, it always seems to downplay the name in general. I work at a school, and occasionally when asking a child his/her name, I hear, "Miranda Nicole Renee Smith." I always want to roll my eyes. JMHO.
