3-syllable girls names
| Wed, 09-21-2005 - 2:08pm |
This is harder than I thought. We need 2 girls names, both 3-syllable. Here are the rules:
1. Nothing ending in A as it doesn't work with our last name.
2. Nothing beginning with the letter A. We have 5 cousins, including a whole sibling set, with A names.
3. Nothing ending with "en" "in" "an" as our last name is similar to Johnson and DH hates the double sound like in Kristen Johnson or Aiden Johnson.
4. Nothing in the top 100.
5. We prefer something Anglo-sounding to go with last name. So even though there are beautiful names such as Gabrielle, we want to stick with names of English, Scottish, Welsh origin.
6. We like both feminine names and strong unisex names. Surnames are also good.
Thanks for any ideas.

Hmmm, that's tricky, nothing in the top 100..
Verity (this name was in the new Harry Potter book :))
Beverly
Jessamine
Rosemary
Imogene
Another thing you could do is since you are interested in names with a UK background, is look up the top 100 names in England/Wales/Ireland right now. I saw it once and there are many names that are unfamiliar and not at all popular in the US.
That is quite a list of rules! Here are some that might work:
Eleanor
Beatrice
Delaney
Bethany
Cicely
Violet
Josephine
Lorelei
Naomi
Melody
Miriam
Valerie
That was tough as so many girls names end in an A or an N. Good luck finding the perfect name!
I can't remember all the rules (except not ending in a), but here are some of my favorites...
Isabelle
Caroline
Julianne
Katherine
Gwendolyn
Gabrielle
Margaret
Madeline
Genevieve
Abigail
Beatrice
Eleanor
Rosalie
Have fun! My daughter is named one of the names above (I won't tell you which one), so I think you are on a good track!
That's a pretty tough set of rules!
Having said that, here are my picks- they're all in use in the UK.
Beatrice
Eleanor
Margaret
Clemency
Harriet
Winifred (I really like this name. It's welsh, and means 'blessed peace')
Adelaide
Dorothy
Millicent (Millie is a top 25 name in the UK, 2004)
Genevieve
Ianthe/Evanthe/Iolanthe (flower, good flower, violet flower)
Eloise
Bernadette
Isolde
Muriel
Meredith
Naomi
Lilias/Lillias/Lileas
Lorelei
Marsali
Miriam/Maryam
Isobel
Myfanwy (woman in welsh, and yes it's used)
Violet (depends on how you pronounce it- I would tend to say it w/2 syllables, but my DH always says vi-o-let).
And here are a few which break your rules a bit, but that I just couldn't leave out
Annabel
Angharad (means more love, and it's in use)
Aranrhod (from welsh myth, and it's also in use)
Imogen
Iona
Fenella
Susanna
Erica/Erika
Clementine
Caroline
Roberta
Vivian
Good luck!

I like strange names and classic names; Im not sure you'll like them, but here it goes:
Zoe
Camille
Josephine
Jocelyn
Louise
Esther
Aubrie
Desi
Jaime
Isabelle
Aimee
Spencer
Andraya (Andy for short)
Hope that helps!
hopefully all of these fit the criteria
Brittany (can be 3 syllables depending on how you say it, most people say it as 2)
Delaney
Dominique
Desiree
Felicity (actually 4)
Hilary
Mallory
Mackenzie
Naomi
Stephanie
Tiffany
Valerie
Waverly (yes, I actually know one)
I think you're limiting yourself too much with the 3-syllable thing with all the other criteria. a lot of 3-syllable girls names are A-enders and I had to eliminate two good ones in Jocelyn & Jillian because they were "n-enders
here are 2-syllables ones that fit all the other criteria
Brittney, Brianne, Brielle, Courtney, Chelsea, Chloe, Elyse, Gisele, Heidi, Hailey, Holly, Kyndle, Molly, Piper, Paige (only 1 though), Torri, Whitney
good luck
You have a challenge on your hands with all the limitations but here are some that I came up with.
I'll toss my daughter's name, Mariel, onto your list!
Good Luck!
Colleen
