37 weeks...can't decide on a name

Our older DS is Luke (Lucas), and we have a two-syllable last name. The ONLY two names DH and I agree on are Ava and Emily, but (a) I'm concerned about the popularity and (b) can't pick which one I like the best of those two.

I don't really want a name that is so popular, but I don't know what to do if those are the only two we like! Not only that, but I can't even pick which one I like better out of those two!

The middle name will be Jewell, honoring my recently-deceased grandmother. This is not up for negotiation as I know it is what I want to do!

Please help, this baby could come any time!

I wouldn't use Ava or Emily- they are WAY too popular. If someone were to ask me what I think the 2 most common girls names are, those would both be it. Instead of Ava, what about Adeline, Ada, Adelaide, Adelaine, Adele, all with nn Addie? Sophie, Clara/Claire, Gemma, Ashlyn, and Evelyn nn Evie are also similar in style, but less common.

Well I would choose Ava out of those two names. I think Ava Jewell sounds pretty too!

just a few suggestions you may like:

Amelia
Ella
Evelyn
Eva (very close to Ava but not as popular!)
Aveline (could use Ava as a nn)
Adeline

HTH!

I really like Emily Jewell. About the popularity Luke is popular also the reason why they are so popular is becuase they are such nice names.

I like Ava also but I like Emily a little better.

If the popularity still bothers you, what about Emmeline nn Emily, Emma, Emmy OR Em?

Ava and Emily are both lovely names, but yes, they are EXTREMELY popular. If you are ok with that (and I think you are) you should just consider the tone of each name. Ava, to me, is sort of old world glamour/Hollywood movie star. It's smoky, sophisticated, and a little mischievious. Emily is pure sweetness, happiness, simplicity. It lacks the glamour of Ava and replaces it with innocence. To me, they are very different names and different moms usually use them. Both work equally well with mn Jewell. I hope this helps!

According to the SSA, Emily is #1 right now, and Ava is #9. Luke was #41 last year. If it were me, I'd stay away from the top 10. I'd shoot for another name around 30-50; still very well known like Luke. Obviously, Luke is a popular, well-known and used name, but it doesn't have the "mega popular" status. There's nothing wrong with choosing a popular name, but IMO, when you pick one in the top 10, it goes beyond popular to trendy, which dates the name and the bearer of the name (trust me, I'm an Amy of the 70s, lol!). A name in the mid-range of the top 100 list will most likely be a well-liked name that is here to stay for the most part, like Luke.

A few to consider that have a similar feel to Emily and Ava, without the "mega name" status:

Instead of Emily:

Cecily

Amity

Everly

Instead of Ava:

Evelyn (Evie)

Tessa

Vivian

Teresa

Serena

Anna

Just some thoughts. I agree with the majority that if you're picking one of these two, I'd pick Ava. I just like how it sounds with the mn (great meaning behind that, BTW) and with Luke. Good luck! I know how hard it is to agree!!

hello!! well, i love the name ava...but it IS popular. but then again, just cuz its on the top 10 list, you might not run into another ava ever. my dd doesnt have any emmas in her class, nor have i run across any with all the people ive worked with over the years...and thats the number 1 name of 2006(i dont think the official list is out yet, but i saw a post on a board-i think it was this one-that had the top 10 names listed). now, for the record, i know 1 emily, but shes 27...and i know 1 ava-and shes a year and a half old. now you could use a version of these names to give it a less popular spin:
averie
emmeline
evageline
or
emma...
btw, i love the middle name-jewell is gorgeous...take care!

I'd go with Ava over Emily since it's slightly less popular.

I LOVE the name Jewell and think it is great to use a family name. All my children have a family name as their middle names.
I don't like Ava nor Emily. I used to like Emily a couple of decades ago, but it is tiresome now because of its popularity. I prefer something less common...like JEWELL!

Have you considered Jewell Emily???? I LOVE that!

I considered Jewelie and Jewelie-Eve/Jewelie-Anne for my daughter. It is a beautiful name with meaning!
