I think it was originally for a boy, but lately I have been hearing and seeing it for a girl, with the nickname of Addie. I don't know how popular it has become, but I do think of it as more as a girly sounding name.
This one really bugs me on girls because it clearly means "Adam's son". SON. Why would you name a girl a name that means "Adam's son"?
On a boy I can totally see it. Would we stop using John on a boy if some random people decided it was a girl's name? To me, Addison will always be a boy's name.
My general belief on -son names is to keep them in context, i.e. Jackson for a son of a Jack or John, etc. However, if you are Christian or believe we all have decended from Adam and Eve I suppose Addison is a name that could fit for any boy in a roundabout way.
IMO, it suits a girl better than a boy. I can see how it would be unisex, but the nn Addie could come up, and that just seems really feminine to me. If a different nn would be used, I would like it on a boy.
