Alex for a girl's name?
| Fri, 09-02-2005 - 2:58pm |
My husband and I are debating over the name Alex for a girl. We already have one daughter named Jaime. We both love the name Alex, but I'm concerned of my confidence in having "Alex" be too much of a boy's name. We both like unisex names. I would want to name her Alexandra or Alexa for more options later. Any thoughts?

i'd vote for alexandra, nicknamed alex. just the short alex is too boy-ish for me.
other unisex names:
Avery
Reece
Erin
Hayden
Maybe this will help....
My oldest daughter is Alexandra Marie.
She is 7 yrs. old and loves her name.
Most of the time her favorite nn is Alex or Allie by her little sister.
The biggest issues that I've had with the name Alexandra :
1. People sometimes will write Alexander on a school form b/c they didn't double check the correct spelling. This really bugs me because I'm very careful about writing "..dra " and female for gender.
2. Call me Alex - not Alexandre, Alexander, Alexa, Alexia, Sandra
3. It is a long name, but she writes Alex Phillips or Alexandra Phillips depending on her mood.
I think you should give your daughter the option of the long name with the nn Alex.
Possible names:
Alexandra nn Alex, Allie
Alexa nn Alex , Lexi( this is the more common nn for Alexa), Lex
Alexia
Alexandria
Alexena
Alexea
Alexinae
Possible nn for Alexandra:
Alex Alexa Alexi Alexia Alexie Alexina Ali Alie Alix Lexa Lexi Lexie Lexy Sanda Sandee Sandi Sandie Sandra Sandy Sasha Xandra

My honorary neice's name is Alexandra Isabella, nickname Alex. While I've heard a lot girls nicknamed Alex (i worked at a girlscout camp), it isnt my thing. I think the name Alexandra is beautiful though and will be a name they can use nicknames with, but will also grow. It also seems to be one of those names so many nicknames can be made out of. lol as random as this is, my sister had a friend who was named Alexandra, nickname-Zand! It is a beautiful name tho, and I love the name Jaime too.
Lizzie
My husband and I are debating over the same thing right now! I actually liked the name Alyx because I thought the spelling was more feminine, even though it is pronounced the same.
But because we fear that she will grow up and not like being stuck with a boy's name, we have agreed that Alexis would be more appropriate and then we can call her Alex. And if she doesn't like that, she can use Ali or Lexy (though I don't really like that one) or the full Alexis.
We thought about Alexandra, which is a beautiful name, but it is long and we are partial to the shorter names for a number of reasons - easier to spell, easier to say, not as long to write...
All that said, we still haven't settled on Alexis. My husband is leaning toward our other option - Paige. I'm being indecisive!
Good luck!

Allie. Her brother's name is Alex. Now I also have seen Alix for a girl. Maybe this helps.
