Okay, thanks for your answers. I'd love any alternatives to Selwen for a girl, but they have to start with S. Also she's going to have a twin sister named Bronwyn so the names should sound good together.

Also, you can't offend me if you have any other comments, I'm doing this for a male friend who's wife is set on Selwen and he rather have something else. TIA

Aren't you a good friend! I'd agree with your pal that Bronwen and Selwen are perhaps not the best matched pair. I did a quick search of Welsh names starting with "S" (Bronwen is a welsh name) and didn't find much I personally liked. But, here are a few girl names starting with "S" (and I actually do know people with all these names) that *I* think go with Bronwen:

Sarah

Siobhan

Shae (Shay)

Sabine

Shannon

HTH and best of luck to your friends!

Bronwyn is a great name, but Selwen just doesn't have the same beauty to it. I’m not sure if the name suggestions are supposed to be Welsh like Bronwyn or not so I am giving suggestions for names that are from various ethnicities.

Sabrina

Scarlett

Shannah

Shannon

Sheena

Siobhan (pro. shiv + awn, like Shavon)

My favorites are Sheena and Siobhan

I've heard of the name Seren for a girl (Sare-in). It could work with Bronwyn, and it's softer than Selwen. There's also Serena.

Okay, I'm working from a book by Linda Rosencrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran called "Baby Names Now." Just FYI -- books by this pair are GREAT, IMHO, tell your friend.

Sooooo, Bronwen's twin sister...

Sanne -- this is scandanavian, pronounced SAH-na

Selah -- I guess this could be SEE-la, like Sela Ward, the actress, or Se-LAH.

Sigrid -- again, scandanavian, but I think it sounds comprable/in the same vein as Bronwen.

Solange -- french, means "rare jewel." I like this one a lot for Bronwen's twin.

You said an "S" name is a must, but just as a side, Rhonwen, Aylwyn, Arienwen (ah-ree-AHN-wen), Brynn, Eleri, Fiona, Rhiannon, and Tegan are all (I think) appealing names listed as Welsh, in case that is a big issue for your friends.

HTH!

I think Bronwyn & Selwen are too similar sounding for twins. Here are my suggestions for S names that sound good with Bronwyn:

Sheridan

Siobhan

Sela

Simone

Shelby

Sterling

Sydney

I don't think they go together for twins. Too similar. Besides looking the same, they shouldn't "same names" too.

Some alternatives they might like to consider

Selina, Sela, Svetlana, Sapphire, Sedona, Serafina

A possible alternative to Selwen may be Cerridwen, which is a goddess name...but the name is pronounced with the "hard C" sound: Kerr-id-wen. Also, I think that w/ the name Bronwyn, it's just too much "-wen" at the end.

How about Selma or Serisa?

Sabia

Saoirse (Seer-sha)

Saraid

Shavonne (Sha-VAWN)

Shea

Sine (shee-na)

Siofra

Sorcha

Good Luck..hope your friends fine the perfect name

Hi! I've loved the name Bronwyn for a long time, but trying to think of an S name that goes well with it? That's a tough one. The best name I could come up with (that hasn't already been suggested, as far as I read) is Sylvana. It's a little softer and prettier than Selwen. It is a Latin-derived name, according to my name book. I love the name Sylvie, but perhaps that sounds just a little too French with such the strong Welsh name Bronwyn. Silvie is another spelling that doesn't look quite so French to me. I'm not sure what language that spelling is used for. Sylvana has a similar strength as Bronwyn, so I think it pairs up a little better.

Thanks for the interesting post.
