Are names with Ellie as a nickname becoming too popular? It is hard to tell what nicknames are becoming popular but I feel like I have seen them on this board a lot. My husband is fighting for Ellie. Thanks for your input.

Yeah, they are getting up there. The name is sweet though. If you both love it, use it. That's the good thing about nn's- they always have another name to fall back on. How about Eloise nn Ellie? A bit more uncommon.

In a word, yes. I know SO many little Ellies. It feels incredibly popular because it can be a nickname for SO MANY different names. I actually know one Eleanor, two Elizabeths, one Gabrielle,

I agree with the pp, the problem is that it is a nn for so many names. I know Ellies whos names are Elizabeth, Elena, Eleanor, Elise, Gabrielle, Anabelle and that is just all I can think of off hand. Very cute, but if you are concerned about popularity then this isn't the name for you.

I agree with all the pps. It does seem to be VERY popular, especially since it can be a nn for any and all names starting with El- or ending with -belle, -bella, -elle, -ella, etc. (all of which have been popping up quite a bit lately). I've known little girls with all the names previously mentioned, as well as an Eliana that is sometimes called Ellie. Of course, it's up to you if this would be too popular. If you absolutely love the name, go for it! ;) And as others have mentioned, if your dh loves Ellie but you'd prefer a less common name you could always go with a full name that's not quite as popular and still call her Ellie yourselves. That way she'd always have some options. ;)

my little girl ellie is nearly 7 now an when i had her, i didnt hear of many children called ellie. but now were i live there are lots of baby s called ellie which to me is a bit dissapointing as i would of liked it to stay unusual. i am now pregnant again and having another girl and im really struggling to find an unusual name for her.

I think they are becoming very popular, but I still love Ellie and many of the full names for it! My fave is Eliana, also love Eleanora. Elizabeth has always been way too popular for me to ever use, although beautiful. Less common is Elicia, Elisha spellings. I know some adult Elena's but no children with the name spelled this way.

good luck!

I just lurk here mostly, but I wanted to jump in and agree. We named our little girl Eliana and she goes by Ellie at home, but I think I am going to stick with Eliana when we are out and about, especially after I met our new Gymboree class. There are only three girls in the Gymboree class: my Eliana, an Ella, and an Eli (pronounced Ellie). Sure this is a total coincidence but geez! I am getting really really scared!
