DH and I both like the name Duncan however, our last name is Hiltz.
Do you think we would be setting him up for "Duncan Hines" jokes.
I'm thinking it's too close, but we hate to let it go because it's the only name we both like :)

Thanks for your help!

If you hadn't brought it up, I wouldn't have made that connection. It still seems like a stretch when I say it out loud.

I love the name Duncan - I say go for it.

I bet every Duncan gets a Duncan Hines or Dunkin' Donuts joke at one time or another. It's such a wonderful name, I want to say don't worry about it. Hiltz and Hines are so similar, though. Both one syllable, both staring with an h and ending with an z sound...I just don't know. If the two last names shared only one or two of those similarites, I'd say go for it without hesitation. Realistically, I do think he'll be teased a little when he's young. Worse, I think well-meaning adults might glance at his name and call him Duncan Hines by accident.

That being said, it's not the end of the world to be teased. I was called "Alison Wonderland" when I was little, and I bet many other perfectly fine adults were teased about their names during childhood. It's not as though "Duncan Hines" is obscene or overly embarassing, and Duncan is such an awesome name. I think he'll love his name when he's older.

I guess I can't resist it. I say use it.

I did think of exactly that when scanning the first line of your post (before I saw it was your concern), but I don't think it's a horrible association. Just depends if it would bother you.

If it would, there are plenty of similar names out there. Have you considered Declan, Deacon, Desmond, Donovan, Dunham or Dunstan (just a few that come to mind, but I'm sure there're others you might like)?

Look at it this way - most kids get teased about something.
