Avalon?

I was just writing to another member about a name she was mulling over, and the name Avalon came up. I think this name is a nice twist on the ever-popular Ava. I happen to LOVE this name and have been trying to get DH onboard with it for the past few weeks and add it to our list...but it seems that every new name I come up with, his response is, "eh." Yet, he has no suggestions either....

So, in the spirit of coming up with the perfect combos to win him over -- and since my previous combos I presented to him made him give me "the face" -- I thought I'd ask:

What middle names go with Avalon? It's a really rare first name. I've never heard it on a child so coming up with a middle name to show DH has been hard. I am Irish and it's a Celtic name. Our last name is a short Italian name so a middle name that is Irish won't work; I just don't think it would look or sound right.

If anyone can help with some really great combos I can show him, I'd love it! Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions! Out of all of them, I like Avalon Lily the best, however, not sure DH would go for Lily since it's really popular by us.

I was just talking w/ DH and I suggested his grandmother's middle name "Mae" with Avalon.

How does Avalon Mae sound?

It might not be that rare in the future. I know one Avalon right now, but I know 2 people who have it on their lists- one is pg and one hopefully will be soon.

I'm trying to like it, but haven't been able to so far. I'd pick a middle name that the kid can use... just in case.

I still don't see it becoming too too popular in the future. It has not even broke the top 1,000 in at least the last 15 years, so I definitely don't see it suddenly shooting up to the the top 100 or even top 10 anytime soon. Even if people will hear of the name, it still will be a rare female first name.

I like your idea of using Avalon Mae -- in honor of your DH's grandma (I believe that's what you wrote?). It has a really pretty ring to it. I'd pick a traditional short middle name, like Mae, since Avalon is rare. If you do wind up shortening it, Ava Mae is really cute despite Ava being so popular. There's always the nickname Lonnie too if you don't object.

Other suggestions:
Avalon Jo
Avalon Grace
Avalon Lee/Lea/Leigh
Avalon Maeve
Avalon Skye (this is not too traditional obviously, but it sounds cool)
Avalon Paige
Avalon Fiora
Avalon Kate/Cate
Avalon Claire

The only thing I have to say about naming your child Avalon, is this...(literate?) people will definitely expect you to be Arthurian legend buffs.

I don't really agree with pp. It's an Irish name, and if that theory were the case, then all parents would have to be buffs on any meaning of their child's name.

The original poster may agree with you though. Just my two cents.

p.s. most people don't know the meaning of any or every name they hear -- I wouldn't worry too much! :)

I'm sure you're already well aware that I love Avalon. ;)

I see someone's already beaten me to it , but I wanted to quickly mention that Fiora (Abigail's mn) is used as a shortened form of the Italian Fiorella (basically a form of Flora) AND as a variation of the Celtic Fiona (obviously), so something like that would honor both heritages ... or at the very least sound just as fitting with both Avalon and

It is a Celtic name, yes, but the word itself is a location (and is said to have its root from the Welsh(?) word for "apple"). According to legend, Avalon is the island King Arthur was brought to, after his death.

Naming your kid Avalon, and having no actual knowledge of its background would be like naming your child Atlantis, without having an understanding of the myths and legends concerning the place itself (the same could be said for Alannis, since it is a variation on Atlantis, but that particular name could also be a pop culture reference to the Canadian singer/songwriter). Just want to clarify here that I'm in no way assuming you don't know anything about Avalon. Simply that I wasn't sure if you'd considered the fact that a lot of people will most likely take you to be very interested in Arthurian legend, if you name her that...and may be asked a lot of questions in relation.

But, I'm also of the opinion that it's a good idea to research any name you're planning to use, unless it's on your list as a family name.

Just my opinion, though.

On another note, since so many people on the board seem interested in nicknames...Ava and Lonny/Lonnie were already suggested, I believe, but Val could also be a possible option.
