Avalon?

I was just writing to another member about a name she was mulling over, and the name Avalon came up. I think this name is a nice twist on the ever-popular Ava. I happen to LOVE this name and have been trying to get DH onboard with it for the past few weeks and add it to our list...but it seems that every new name I come up with, his response is, "eh." Yet, he has no suggestions either....
So, in the spirit of coming up with the perfect combos to win him over -- and since my previous combos I presented to him made him give me "the face" -- I thought I'd ask:
What middle names go with Avalon? It's a really rare first name. I've never heard it on a child so coming up with a middle name to show DH has been hard. I am Irish and it's a Celtic name. Our last name is a short Italian name so a middle name that is Irish won't work; I just don't think it would look or sound right.
If anyone can help with some really great combos I can show him, I'd love it! Thanks!

I apologize, but I'm not the original poster who started this thread...
I do disagree though, as lots of parents name their children based on the sound of the name and not always the meaning behind the name. Of course, the majority of us on the boards are name buffs, but not all people/parents are and may not even know the meaning of Avalon in order to ask if the original poster is an Arthurian buff.
I do like the suggestion of the nickname Val though. That's a good one.
No disagreeing please! :)
I just wanted some really good combos with middle names that go with Avalon. I have to admit I heard the name and loved the sound of it before I knew what it meant -- and I am by no means an Arthurian buff...but I still love it! :)
Eh ... I wouldn't worry too much about the whole Arthurian legend angle. Obviously you do know the meaning behind it -- it's not that hard to "discover," KWIM? -- and it's not like every other person out there, besides us, will immediately ask about it. After all, look at how often you see names like Owen, Guinevere, Genevieve, Morgan and Vivian/Vivien -- heck, even ARTHUR -- on people's lists, and very few generally ask if their "Arthur buffs," KIWM? ;) My FIL's name IS Arthur, and as far I know no one's ever asked him if his parents were really into the legends. LOL
FWIW, I'd be just as likely to assume some sort of Celtic heritage as simply a legendary reference if I heard of a child named Avalon. Seems to be an appropriate assumption, especially in this case. ;) Like I said, no worries.

I didn't mean to start a disagreement! lol, I just wasn't sure if you'd considered the legendary angle of the name. Obviously, Guinevere/Guenevere, Arthur, Lance, etc. are going to have those connotations as well, but I wouldn't think it'd be quite on the same level, since they're regular names, and were certainly not exclusively used on those people in their time. Avalon just seems much more specific if it were to be a reference, KWIM?
I do agree the sound of it is lovely, though. And redsoxgirl, I'm glad you like my nn suggestion of Val: it's my favourite of the three possibilities presented. More feminine than Lonny, but less common/trendy/expected than Ava.
Anyway, I think Avalon Beatrice sounds nice, but it might be a little too long for some, especially depending on how many syllables are in your ln. Both names also carry literary references, which I adore, being a bibliophile. lol. We've already covered Avalon's connection to King Arthur...
If you aren't familiar with Dante's epic poem, The Divine Comedy (The Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradisio), Beatrice is Dante's perfect woman. She acts as his guide through Heaven in the Paradisio. This could be your possible Italian toss-in to the name, yes? ;-)
All beautiful suggestions and insights, Soma and Kelli!! I do like the fact that Beatrice would be a tribute to our Italian background. Very nice. And I do like the nn Val. Short, sweet and much less trendy than Ava and not as old fashioned to me as Lonny/Lonnie.
Unfortunately, DH nixed Avalon and Avery last night (I had posted on the boys' forum about Avery last night as well). He hates the sound of both names. I can't get him to agree to anything! Grrrr. Oh well. We still have plenty of time. :)
Despite DH not liking very many names I present, I do love having this sounding board though! Definitely a great place to "try it on" and "test it out" before suggesting it to him on a whim. :)

Just a funny sidenote ... when we were expecting Aila and Guinevere, Gwendolen, Genevieve, etc. came up, dh immediately commented that they were "too King Arthur," which I thought was HILARIOUS, given his father's name is Arthur (mentioned earlier) and he has an Aunt Gwen AND an Uncle Lance. ROFL Seems something like Guinevere would fit right in.
Incidentally, he did like Gwyneth/Gwen ... it's just the "frillier" versions he wasn't into. Thought it was funny.
