Interesting choice! Is this a family name? I would love to know what drew to you the name Adlai.

My vote went to Adlai Samuel. Adlai Jacob is a solid choice too.

I also like:
Adlai Elias
Adlai Harrison
Adlai Nathaniel
Adlai Theodore
Adlai Barrett
Adlai Jamison
Adlai Thomas

Good luck,
Brooke

no, not a family name, I originally was looking for a beautiful italian boy name, our youngest now who is 2 is Daniel Giovanni, but we stumbled on Adlai, and just loved it. It fit and we have already called him by this name. To be honest 95% of the people we tell really are opinionated and dont like it at all.... and that has made it a little hard, but we really like it. Thanks for your suggestions. I like Adlai Thomas. Our last name is Benedict

hmm...I wonder if the negativity is because Addie names are so big for girls right now? I think of Adlai Stevenson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adlai_Stevenson). I forgot this in my previous post, I thought the pronunciation was AD-lay? Stick to your guns, if you love it go for it!

I really like the name but I've never heard it pronounced with that extra syllable in the middle.

I think I like Adlai Samuel the best.

Its so funny to get these repsonses about Adlai, because, our original pronunciation was Ada Lay, and we were gettting all kinds of grief telling us that it was to feminine sounding, that it should be ad a lie .

Thanks for your comments, I love ad a lay anyway, and I keep having to "correct" myself and say oops, ad a lie.

I really like Adlai, too! Good job on a name choice. For middle names I always like to use a family name if that's an option.

But I, too, would caution about the pronunciation -- that extra syllable isn't in the spelling and really makes the ad-a-lie pronunciation seem "off" (even mistaken) IMHO. Honestly, it seems that you as the parents read it/learned it wrong and didn't figure out that it was wrong. Sorry if that seems blunt, but that's *my* initial impression and I'd not like to see you have other people think this.

The most famous "Adlai" of the modern era -- Adlai Stevenson -- was pronounced ad-lie and I think this is what most people will assume when they see the name.

Actually, it was pronounced ad-lay. I posted this on the other board when this came up...

The New York Times, July 29, 1952

Mark Twain Party Verse Made Adlai Chaos Worse

By The Associated Press.

ST. LOUIS, July 28 - Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois, the Democratic Presidential nominee, blames Mark Twain "for the confusion that exists as to how to pronounce my first name."

In a recent letter to Cyril Clemens, head of the International Mark Twain Society, he said:

"While my grandfather, Adlai E. Stevenson, was Vice President *** Mark Twain was at a luncheon where grandfather was a guest. The newspapers of the time quoted Mark Twain as follows on the pronunciation of my first name:

" 'Philologists sweat and lexicographers bray,
" 'But the best they can do is to call him Ad-lay.
" 'But at longshoremen's picnics, where accents are high,
" 'Fair Harvard's not present, so they call him Ad-lie.'

"Anyway, the correct pronunciation is 'Ad-lay,' although, to put it mildly, I have been called many things."
