Baby boy number 2- Irish name

We need your help with finding the perfect Irish name for our second boy. DS (2-10-03) is Aidan and we had no idea it was soooooo popular when we picked it. On our honeymoon in 2000, we bought a Celtic Names for Children book while in Ireland with the intent of giving all of our kids Irish names.

We have hit a huge stumbling block with DS2- EDD 4-25-06. We cannot agree on one name. DH wants something "really Irish" and I want something that is easy to pronouce, easily recognizble, but not another Aidan (it's too darn bad Logan is so popular!!)

We are tossing around the idea of Finnian (NN Finn, nmn decided yet) Kenyon. Is that too unusual in the states? We live in a very conservative town with a very conservative set of parents.

Advice, or suggestions please!

Thanks,
Julie and Ryan

I like Finnian a lot, but I LOVE Logan. And I don't think its that popular AT ALL. I hear it rarely on boys now. I knew one little girl named Logan, which I didn't love. I think its adorable on boys. How about Seamus?

I agree ... I LOVE Logan. I've actually never met a sigle one (except for an Irish guy my husband worked with whose last name was Logan - which he went by). I see it a lot online, especially for girls - which really irks me lol - but I'd definitely say it's all boy.

Another one like this (that people are also using for girls, so really nothing's safe and I wouldn't worry about it) is Rowan. With it's similarity to Ryan, I think this one is a great one if you want something "different but not too different." I mean, everyone's heard of Ryan, right. Now just substitue the Ry- with a Row- ... not unheard-of. :)

We also considered Killian for a boy (but ended up with three girls lol). We really like it, and you could use the nickname Ian (another great name, but definitely more popular). The only problem we encountered with this one was that a lot of people we mentioned it to assumed we were naming him after the beer - Killian's Irish Red. rofl Definitely not true, but I guess that's the only time they'd ever heard of the name. So again, this one wouldn't be so different as to be unheard-of, but you might not appreciate the context in which it was heard. ;)

Anyway, those were three of the top contendors on our boy's list. HTH!

I don't think Logan is very popular - I haven't come across a Logan yet (and I have 6 kids LOL).

We use Irish names as well (and we are expecting our 6th boy)...

How about:

Connor
Riley
Caden
Kieran
Liam (I think we're using this for our baby)
Brady

I have two boys, both with irish names. Aiden is our youngest at 4 years old,
we also named him without realizing how popular it was. Thankfully our oldest, he's 6, still has a unique irish name but not too different. his name is Bannon. My husband who is irish decided on this name after a famous irish warrior "Bannon Michael Montgomery". Everyone loves his name, including Bannon. He is the only Bannon in his class, we saw his name for the first time as someone's last name, Bannon was excited to see it somewhere els but he is glad that he dosen't get confused with others in his class. We are now expecting baby #3, which is a girl and are at a loss for another special irish name. So good luck to you both on your little one.

Many very common names are Irish. Here's a link that might help.

Thanks to all that replied. I am still so torn about picking the right the name and even though I know I still have many many weeks to go (16 to full term) I just want to have a name picked out.

Could it be this is the only thing that I feel I have control over these days??

Thanks again!

I know exactly how you feel ... I have 16 weeks to go as well, and I feel like I just have to have a name for this little girl soon. :) Soooo tired of calling her "the baby" or "your new baby sister" (to our oldest daughter lol). I don't know if it's a control thing so much as an obsession. ;)

I think my husband thinks I'm going off the deep end lately. Couldn't resist making up a "Baby Name Survey" for him to fill out (basically, how much he likes our top first name choices on a scale of 1 to 10 and then listing his three favorite middle names - in order - for each). I have my reasons, though.

1. It's so hard to gage which names are his favorite from his vague man answers, so I figure getting him to actually think about each one and rate it somehow will give me a better idea of where we're headed.

2. It's actually kind of a neat keepsake for the baby. I did something similar with our second daughter and that list (which, of course, includes her first and middle names as both our top picks) is now in her baby book for her to see later in life.

Anyway, that should either make you feel better about your own obsession or perhaps just think I'm crazy. ;) Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone.

I think Kellan from someone else's list is a good choice to go with Big Brother Aidan. I don't think Finnian would fit with Aidan or with the American way here. Maybe abroad it works but I would hesitate using it here in the US.

Picture yourself yelling out the door at the boys playing in the yard...
"Aidan...Kellan...Time for dinner."

Have a Happy New Year.

I really like Brendan. I do know one Logan, who's probably a teenager by now, but don't know any Aidens - maybe it depends on where you live...
