We are trying to pick a name for our first baby - a boy. I need some help deciding on a name. Our last name is a single syllable and very simple. So I'd like a first name that isn't too trendy, but not too unusual. Here are some we are thinking of, but the more I think about it, I'm not sure which one I like.

What do you think of these choices? Any other suggestions would be great.

James
Jack
Jackson
Nolan
Ryan
Owen
Carson
Andrew (could call him Drew)
Joshua

Ironically I am a fan of all the names you picked, it's hard to narrow them down.
I really like Jackson (Jack), Nolan & Owen.

My thoughts:

Because you have a single syllable last name, I would probably eliminate Jack and Drew (as much as I like both names). James is almost like 1.5 syllables so it would still work.

Nolan and Owen are my favorites from your list. Ryan is just too popular, I know more female Carsons than makle ones these days and Joshua is just nms.
Other names I like:

Ian
Miles
Eli
Truman
Asher
Davis
Calvin
Liam (possible nn for William)
Colin

I don't like two one-syllable names together, so for me that nixes Jack & James.

also, if your name is very common (you said simple, so maybe common isn't exactly what you meant) but either way Jack and James are too simple and common for that

I love Joshua - 3 syllables, 1-syllable last name. to me that's a perfect thing

my next choices in order would be Andrew, Carson, Ryan - although Ryan is so overly popular of all ages, if you have a very common 1-syllable name there are bound to be others with it named Ryan

good luck

I love the name Nolan! It's very masculine and not too "out there" or pretty boy sounding. You can't go wrong with a famous sports name for a boy...DH and I have picked Peyton after Peyton Manning for our first son....plus, we just love the name. Good luck!!!
