I already started a poll for my question but would like to receive everyone's comments as well. We are naming our new little girl Tilly or Tillie. We cannot decide on a spelling. She is being named after her great grandmother Matilda who always went by the nickname Tilly/Tillie. I do not like the full name Matilda so we are sticking with just Tilly/Tillie. Please let me know what spelling you prefer and why. Thanks so much!

I love Matilda and I LOVE the nn you've chosen.

Oh, I love Tilly/Tillie! I think it's absolutely adorable. I think either spelling is fine, but I prefer Tillie. No reason why, I just think it's pretty.

One piece of unsolicited advice -- I would give her a full name and let Tillie be the nickname. While I absolutely think Tillie is adorable and sweet and wonderful, it definitely looks/feels like a nickname. I think it would be nice for her to have a full name to put on her formal documents someday. Also, I just always think it's nice to give options. If you name her Matilda she has the option of always being Tillie. OR if she doesn't like Tillie for some reason, she can be Matilda or Tilda or Mattie or whatever SHE likes best. She has to wear this name for the rest of her life. It seems like a nice thing to do to give her a few options for someday down the line. It's quite possible she'll be like your grandmother and always go by Tillie. But if she decides someday that it just doesn't fit her -- that she wants something more grown up or more popular or whatever -- then giving her a full name lets her have a little extra control. If you really dislike Matilda, you could give her a different full name that shares the nickname Tillie, like Tallula/Tallulah. You are still honoring your grandmother by using the nn Tillie, but you are giving your daughter a plethora of other options as well: Tally, Lucy, Lula, Lulu, etc. If you are open to the idea of a full name but don't like Matilda or Tallula (both of which I absolutely love, btw) let us know and we'll help you brainstorm a full name!

We did consider naming her a "full" name but decided against it. I am all for naming a child the name you are going to call them and especially the name that you like. Afterall, look how popular names like Ellie have become. I do not see a bunch of Eleanors around, just Ellie. So, we are sticking with Tillie/Tilly.

I like Tillie, just because the other spelling only makes me think of the store Tilly's.
