Baby Name Regrets?
| Sat, 03-31-2007 - 5:53pm |
Do you wish you'd named your baby something different? Or do you have name regrets at all? I have seven children and my only regret is with my oldest: Kyra. I wish we'd spelled it Keira because people tend to pronounce it like it rhymes with Tyra (like Tyra Banks) instead of it's actual pronunciation which rhymes with ear. Actually I'm lying, I also wish I'd had more of a backbone and given Matthew a more unique name. Matt's the only one that has a "common" name. Our kids are: Kyra, Matthew, Tanner, Rhiannon, Garrick, Aubrey, & Jenna. So, Matt is much less trendy than the other names. So what (if any) name regrets do you have?

I was just pondering the whole "Kate" thing earlier, because I actually call her that about 90% of the time now (more than anyone). ;)
One of the things we liked about Kaitlyn was that she could go by Kate, Katie, Kat, Kit or Lyn(n) if she ever wanted, but we didn't use any of those until recently ... kind of wanted to let a nn develop, since we weren't tied to any certain one (though I always liked that Kate sidesteps the trendiness a bit, since she could just as easily be a Katherine, Katrina or Catriona, KWIM? ... Of course you do. ). That's probably why I've grown so attached to it, though I especially love how crisp and classic is sounds. It definitely suits her. And FWIW, she's not a "Katie" in the least. I always cringe a bit when people call her that. LOL

I'm another that named my son not aware of the "aidan" trend.

My goodness, Michelle ... I hadn't realized little Alaina was due so soon! Any day now, huh? ;)
Here's to a happy and healthy delivery! Keep us posted.

You're right, Raiden is a legit one.
Caden & Braden can be drawn back to portions of Gaelic surnames, but the names themselves aren't all that historic as far as I know.
Jaden is actually just a mispelled biblical name. I don't like it at all, & it's grossly trendy, but maybe it deserves more credit then we give it?
I'm pretty sure that Zayden is just ridiculous though, right? ;)
Well my Aiden is now almost 8 and at the time the name was no where on the SS lists. The spelling came from a family tree (we didn't know it was misspelled there too ), he was our first and we didn't know better to research further. I know that the -den spelling rubs a lot of people here the wrong way, but it is what it is.
My DDs names are perfect, I wouldn't change a thing, of course I did a LOT more research with their names. I was prepared, LOL!
Zayden IS utterly ridiculous! ;) And all the misspellings of Jadon are equally annoying. Once upon a time, many years ago, I liked this quite a bit because it's only one letter off my dh's name (we don't generally use the exact names as relatives, especially in the same household). Actually, I LOVED Aidan way back when as well -- still do, to be honest -- but the trendiness has killed it for me, at least for personal use.
I somewhat agree about Caden, but only because the information generally offered on it is so vague. BTN, for example, basically lists it as a form of Cadán/Cadáin/MacCadáin (really the same as Cadáin, but I wanted to be clear LOL), which it then relates to Cathán. So it's there, but not entirely forthright, KWIM? ;)
Braden, on the other hand, DOES seem to share a strong history with it's Gaelic equivalent Bradán (Fionn MacCool, the Salmon of Knowledge and all that). Obviously, it's an Anglicized form, but still akin to Fionn vs. Finn ... not nearly the bastardization of misspellings like Braydynn. In fact it's common for such names to have accepted Anglicizations: Áedán/Aodhán/Aidan or Nuallain/Nuallan/Nolan, for example. So if you agree that Aidan and Nolan, at least, are acceptable -- even standard -- spellings, it follows that Braden is as well.
Just my take on the subject. ;)

I'm sad to admit it, but I do regret Jaden *a little.*
It's my 3 year old son's name and it has become so trendy and popular since we named him that. And apparently it's also commonly used for a girl. We had no idea how popular it was about to come along with every rhyming and variation you could think of.
I'm glad we chose such a simple spelling for it. I know the actual biblical spelling is Jadon, but I didn't look that far into it at the time and I think Jaden is a normal and not out of control spelling.
But the pediatrician always asks when HER birthday is, etc. when I call for appointments. And no one says it to ME, but in general (on the board for instance) people have negative things to say about it.
Okay, ASIDE from the fact that we ALL know at least 10 Jaden/Hayden/Aiden/Cadens, it is still a nice, cute name and I love it, in and of itself.

#2 coming 4/3 (And we don't know her name!)
Just editing to add that now that I'm reading all the other posts...maybe we should form a support group or something! ;)

Because they are and forever (or at least for the near future LOL) will be the "Aidan" names. Aidan is the original. The one that started it all, so to speak. So even those names that aren't created or misspelled wind up feeling like they're just tagging along behind. ;) Sure, a few of them have been around for quite some time (even as long as or longer than Aidan), but he's the one with the trend named after him, so the rest end up looking like copycats.
