It makes me think of the 70s song "Wildfire" about a girl and her pony.

She ran calling Wildfire...
She ran calling Wildfire...

I'm guessing it's a nickname... sounds silly to me.

I'm gonna go with the "nickname that only works in baseball" take...like "Pudge" Rodriguez or "Babe" Ruth. It just carries an entirely different connotation on a ballplayer than it would on, say, an arson investigator or a divorce attorney.

If the year was 1911, then the player was probably Frank Schulte. He was a Chicago Cub during the best years of his career (including 1911). Wildfire was NOT his name, just his nickname (seems like all the players back then had nicknames). To me, Wildfire as a given name would be way over the top (just my opinion).
