A co-worker recently had a little girl, Rebecca Grace, and she hates the nn Becky and wants her daughter to be called Rebecca or Becca. I have known several girls with the name Rebecca who hate the nickname Becky. It is not that these people dislike the name Becky, they despise it! I have always loved the name Becky - I think it is sweet and no different from Katy, Abby, etc. So, the point of this post is what do people not like about the name Becky?

It just doesn't have a pretty sound, I guess ... reminds me of Bucky. It also feels more dated than, say, Katie (imagine the old "valley girl" voice saying it LOL), while Becca seems a bit fresher. Not just my opinion. My SIL is Rebekah, nn Bekah, and we've discussed it before. LOL

Thanks belle_petite for the siggy!
I've wondered this, too. It's been 15 years since I've met a Rebecca who goes by Becky, and I think that's a shame. I think Becky's a sweetheart of a nn, with all the pluck of Becky Thatcher and the charm of Abbie, Annie, and Lizzie. Becca has an entirely different vibe to me and leaves me cold.
I guess it's going through a cycle, like Betty vs Lizzie and Peggy vs Maggie.
I'm Rebecca nn Becky. I actually HATE being called Becca. I think that depending upon what your family calls you you will have an aversion to the other nickname. I have had people tell me that they disliked the name Becky before they met me, bad associations with stuck up girls I guess.
My husband's cousin's name is Rebecca also and she never went by Becky or Becca, always Rebecca and occasionally Bec.
I like Becky because it's a friendly, spunky, all American name.
What I've never understood is why, when there are thousands of great names to choose from, someone would choose a name when they despise the most common nickname for it.
I don't think the name Becky ages well.

<JMO, but I really dislike it. It reminds me of the '80's.
