Blanking on a Name

I've been browsing these threads, and hope maybe I can find some help here. I'm due in July with my third, and I know I have lots of time left, but we've never had trouble with names before. I've got a daughter named Claire and a son named Christian. I'm not sure I want to still do the "C" thing...it was not done purposefully before; those just happened to be our top two picks for a girl and a boy. But now I wonder if the child would have a complex, if he/she didn't have a C name.

I want to call it by its first name, and I don't want anything too prone to nicknaming. I'm looking for a balance of people-will-know-to-spell/pronounce-it and there-aren't-four-of-them-in-the-preschool-class. It seems I've done okay with the other two. I also am hoping to find a name that "goes with" the other two, style-wise.

Hubby likes Abigail (worried about the popularity) and Meredith (drawback: last name also starts with M) for girls. He likes Connor and Noah for boys (again with the popularity, though Christian is higher up on the list than both of those, and we haven't run into many so far.)

I like Audrey, also Elinor and Charlotte (which DH has firmly nixed), and am leaning right now towards Kate (not Katherine, nn Kate, but just Kate)-- I think it complements the other siblings' names, as well as has the hard "C" sound.

For a boy's name, I am mostly at sea, though I do like Gabriel, and DH's choices are okay.

I'm just not used to thinking all the names are "meh". Nothing is jumping out at me. Can anyone help?

Of the names on your list, I think Kate is the most likely to run into classmates with the same name.

I would avoid another C name. From your choices, with Christian and Claire, I think Audrey works beautifully. Abigail is way too popular. How about Luke for a boy? I really love the way it goes with Christian and Claire. Henry, Marcus, and Kyle also go well. For a girl, maybe Evelyn nn Evie? Or Lucy?

First, I really like both Claire and Christian. I think you shouldn't worry about using a nother C name or even a name with that hard C sound. To me, Kate isn't the best fit...it is just too similar to Claire, to me (although I like Kate in general a lot). Abigail is VERY popular and I wouldn't use it for that reason alone, but also it lacks the quaintness of Claire. Charlotte is out, you say, but to me, it has a more similar feel while still maintaining its own unique sound. Meredith doesn't seem right to me. Let's see...how about:

Anna
Elise
Hope
Faith
Audrey
Hannah (much less popular than it once was)
Sara
Mary
Lila
Elinor
Lily (may be too popular)
Julia
Helen (rare; lovely on a little girl)
Celeste
Diana
Rose (common only as a mn)
Pauline
Paige
Lucy

As for boys, I think Noah and Connor are way too mianstream for you. Gabriel works very well, I think. how about:

Caleb
Grant
Neil
Carson (rarer than Connor)
Brooks
Baron
Archer
Peter
Paul
Philip
Palmer
Lucas
Julian
Henry
Andrew
Daniel

I can see why you're tempted to keep going with the "C"s now that you've started it. What about using a C name that fits in style but doesn't have the hard C sound? For instance:

Christian, Claire, and Celeste

Christian, Claire, and Cedric

Christian, Claire, and Charles

Christian, Claire, and Celine

Amy, mom to Nate (9), Calvin (7), and Tobias (4). You can find me at my blogs:

DH and I are sort of in the same boat - we have a daughter named Cassidy and DH loves the name Christian if we have a boy next. I don't mind them as sibling combos, but what about if we have a third? I'm not sure I'm into the all the same first letter thing, but I don't want the third to feel out of place.

A PP mentioned Lauren. I love that name, and it got me thinking. Claire and Christian flow together with the first letter, and if you use a name for this baby that ends in "an" or "en", it would sound similar in sound to Christian without having the same first letter. So, Claire, Christian and Lauren to me sounds great, because Christian has something in common with both names. KWIM?

Just a thought - I thought I'd throw it out there. HTH!

personally, I'd probably stick with the Cs in that case - and I like Conner a lot, think it would go well with Claire and Christian - popularity probably is somewhat of an issue, but I think it's tailed off a little lately among newborns/pre-schoolers - most of the Conners I know are between 6 and 16.

I'm not a fan of Kate by itself - could you do Caitlin with a C

I love Noah if you aren't worried about the C and/or the apparent popularity, although I also don't know that many Noah's for that to be a concern

on other names you mentioned - I much prefer Aubrey over Audrey, can't blame the nubby for nixing Charlotte (this AWFUL trend of calling little girls Charlie just really gets me), I can't get past the old-lady feel of Eleanor, I think I knew too many really old Eleanor's when I was a kid, Gabriel is too feminine sounding, it's not different enough from the girl's Gabrielle.

other boys C possibles - Colin, Colton, Cory

other girls C possibilities - Cara, Corinne, Carina, Callie, Carly, Cassandra (nn Cassie), Carrie.

good luck
