We are hoping to be selected by an expectant mom due in early June (for an adoption). She does not know the sex of the baby which is fine with us. For a girl, we are set on a first name (Ella Grace - after our grandmothers) and will probably combine with with either the birthmom's name of something she likes for a middle name. We're having trouble with a boy...

-We both like Alex (NOT Alexander, just Alex)
-DH likes Emmett -I could live with it, but it sounds kinda old manish to me!
-I love Emmanuel, but no one else does!

So, we're thinking it will be Alex, but should we do Alex Emmanuel, Alex Scott (DH is Scott, but this doesn't flow well

Ouch, you may want to reconsider Emmitt. It has a heavy connotation to Emmitt Till - unless you were wanting that. It may be too risky, especially if you are *not* African American. Even if you are - tread carefully!

That said, Alex has a fresh sound if it's just Alex (I'm trying to so that with Roxie - not- Roxanne, but I'm getting mixed results in my poll ).

Anyway! Have you considered Elijah or Isaac? Seems up your alley.

:)

I have to admit, I'd never heard of Emmett Till until you mentioned him. While that was a truly horrid crime, I don't think Emmett is solely tied to him...it's an ages-old Irish name, (also the old professor in the Back to the Future movies, or a character on the Andy Griffith show, or Emmitt Smith.)

That said, I prefer Emmett to Alex..there was a slew of Alexes of all ilks a couple of years back (I even knew a family with an Alexis "Alex" and an Alexander "Alex"...never understood how the third child escaped being Alexandra.) So it doesn't have the "pop" of Emmett to me. I do, also, prefer it as a nn. Now, Alec, on the other hand...that would stand very nicely on its own.

Emmett isn't a bad name! But Emmett Till is a HUGE name in the civil rights movement. No offense, please, I'm just saying it *is* extremely well known, especially in the black community.

Just pointing it out :)

I like Emmett a lot. I *do* think of Emmett Till, but I don't necessarily think the name is off limits because of this.

I'm not offended, I just don't think it really would be a problem name, any more than the shooting of Martin Luther King Jr. has rendered Martin unusable, or the murders of two Kennedy brothers (and the misbehaviour of several relations) has let to Kennedy going unused. It's not a common name, but it's not one of those names (say, Cher or Oprah) which is so little used that it only brings one person to mind.

To me, primarily, Emmett conjures up Robert Emmett, who was hung for his part in trying to free Ireland from British rule. I think what images it brings up is going to depend on what your primary interests are--the civil rights movement in your case, Irish history in my case, and football for a large chunk of others.
