DH's top pick is Grant and I really love Alexander. Tonight DH suggested Tyler. I'm thinking about it, wondering how well it fits and if this is too popular of a name. I did find that Alexander is pretty popular right now and Tyler was in the 90s and early 2000s. I'm pretty sure that Grant isn't in the top 25, but I have a difficult time saying the name. LOL, so not too keen on it although I do like it on paper. DH also likes Ethan, which I think is popular at the moment. I know of at least 2 co-workers who have sons with that name.

DS1 is Samuel and cousins include Benjamin, Nathan, Henry, Jackson, Thomas, Ryan, Evan, James, Jakob, Melanie, Kiera, Sara, William (Liam), John (Jay), Daniel, Isaac, Rebeka, Katherine, Robin, Emma, Grace, Natalie and Evangaline. I'm not even going to list middle names as some of them have two middle names.

We had out and out battles over boy names with my second pregnancy. Thankfully, she was a she or I can't even imagine what it would have been like having to truly find a name.

I'm not a fan of Grant. For me it's a hard sounding name. Tyler is nice, I don't know of any around here by me (my oldest is 13 and my youngest is 3). No Ethans either. Out of what you've given, I prefer Alexander (but I'm a fan of big names that have nicknames in them already - Alexander/Alex, Matthew/Matt, Joseph/Joe, William/Will (though I love Liam), and so on).

If you're not going to do a middle name to name him after anyone, I really like the name Alexander Grant. Maybe compromise with that?

Good luck!!

We aren't fighting but are having trouble coming up with something we both feel completely sure of. Our current list of boy names include: Jackson, Jacob, James, Liam, Gunner, Colt, Andrew, and Abram. Our every changing list of girl names so far: Isabella, Sarah, Abigail, Olive, Olivia, Emily, Charlotte, and Lillian.

We crossed Tyler off our list early because it seems like almost everyone we know has a Tyler.

Thank you for your replies!

I also like names that have built-in nicknames. We already have decided on the middle name of Davis since it is DH's mother's maiden name and close to my brother's and dad's first name of David without actually being the same name. Alexander Grant does sound good to me, but DH is set against Alexander now. He doesn't like Alex, Lex or Xander for nicknames. Since I want our son to have a name we both can live with, Alexander is out. Cry

DH's other suggestions: Cole, Hayden seem kind of trendy to me. Ethan might be too popular and it reminds me of the NBC soap Passions (my BFF in high school loved that show). DH wasn't too thrilled with Everett, Joseph is the name of a very close friend, Liam is actually the nickname for DS's cousin William since there is another William (Will) in the family, and DH just doesn't like Matthew. Sigh.

I was about ready to believe our son would be named Spike or something when DH suggested Tyler. While not my first choice we don't know any, it's not in the family on either side, I can say it without grinding my teeth (like Grant) and DH likes Ty for a nickname. But...I'm not completely sold on it and no matter what the name we both agree that we'd like to avoid the situation where he is 1 out of many with the same name in school.

It's too bad he doesn't like Alexander. Cole is pretty nice. Here are some others to toss around: Gabriel, Gable, Griffin, for alternate "G" names. Eben, Elias, Elliot are less popular alternatives to Ethan. My fave "Ty" name is Tiberius, but that's another thread, haha. Other thoughts are Asa, Malachi, and Jude.

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

I think we have a contender now! We realized that the trend is to have different names so we looked on some 'classic' name lists and spotted Edward. It's a name on both sides of the family but hasn't been used in generations. My dad is way into family history and combed through the family trees. It has built in nicknames, bonus! I can say it, super bonus, ha ha. Also it is not a very very popular name these days (somewhere in the top 150), isn't usually misspelled or said incorrectly, and there aren't too many ways to be teased (I'm sure kids will come up with something for any name, but anyway). DH really likes that with Davis as a middle name the initials spell Ed. Whatever floats your boat, lol. Ahhhhhh.

We haven't totally kicked out Grant and who knows in the next few weeks (i'm 32w now) we may totally change our minds!
