My husband and I are expecting our second in August. If we have a girl, we have already chosen Helen Harper Scout Taylor (LN Ellis). She will go by Harper. But, we are stumped with the boys name. Our son's name is Rhett Eli Aloysius and we can't find a name that is as masculin and straight-forward as Rhett. I am looking for something that isn't common or trendy sounding. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm guessing you're a fan of To Kill A Mockingbird? Harper and Scout all in one name... I LOVE the name Rhett. Its fabulous. How about Wyatt, Colby, Jeremiah, or Jebediah? Would you mind if the second boy's name is 1-syl as well? Its so much easier to think of a strong 1-syl name than one that is longer.

I love the name Wyatt, but there is already one in the family. But, that is exactly the right kind of name that we are looking for. I don't mind having another 1-syl name for the second baby. I'm glad that you got the Mockingbird reference as in Canada right now, everyone is saying 'Oh, Harper, like the Prime Minister?' Scout is sort of a double meaning for us. It is from Mockingbird, but it is also the closest female name that we could find to Scott, which is the name of a favorite student of mine who was killed in a car accident. Anyway, any suggestions for strong boy names...any number of syllables...would be appreciated.

We really do have similar tastes. I love many of your names! This will be our last child, so any name goes...except my other girl favorite, Wren (too close to Rhett). Finn and Heathcliff (nn Heath) are definite possibilities. I also love Atticus, but I have a close friend with a son named Atticus. Thanks for the great lists.

I love Finn! One of my best friend's has a son named Finian nn Finn, so obviously that's out me, but I still love it. And Heathcliff nn Heath is really growing on me.

Boys names are much harder for me than girls names. My girls names have been set in stone for ages (Caroline Harper, named after my grandmother and Harper Lee; and Eleanor Blythe,

Hi there. Congrats on your second baby!

Rhett is a very handsome name; great work there. Harper is also pretty cute, although I'm not a fan of Helen. Family name? I'd personally go w/Harper Helen Taylor Scout Ellis to avoid confusion. Actually, I'd go w/only the two mns. Three is a bit much, & Rhett only has two.

Anyway, here are some boy suggestions for you:

Atticus-I'm serious! You seem to like that book quite a bit, & Atticus is a fabulous name. Atticus Ellis is a bit hissy, but it is a cool name.

Abbott

Alden

Alec

Benton-Although Ben is really popular.

Brant

Clark

Emerick

Flynn

Flint

Finn

Graham

Grant

Grey/Gray

Gus-Or August(us) nn Gus, although I don't care for this w/Ellis either.

Jude

Jem-I love it! Jeremy nn Jem would be good too.

Kurt-I like Curtis too, but CurtiS ElliS is not so good.

Nolan

Norman/Norm

Pierce-Ah, it also has an S sound.

Rafe

Stewart

Sebastian/Satch

Thatcher/Thatch

Tucker/Tuck

Thane

Tate

Weston/West

Zev

Zeb

Hope this helps!

She's going to have 4 names plus the surname? Why?!?!?!? Why would you do this to her? Just name her Harper Helen, Harper Scout or Harper Taylor and be done with it!

I admit that four names is quite a few, but I don't really see it as a problem. It has the same number of syll. as my son though it is one name more. Helen will never be used, except for forms and is in honor of a family member. Both of the middle names Scout and Taylor are after my deceased student, Scott Taylor. I don't really understand people's concerns with middle names affecting kids. Honestly, how many times in your adult life has anyone even known or asked your middle name? Harper would be able to decide whether to use just Harper professionally or H. Harper or all four. I don't think it is going to scar her in anyway. If anything, I think it will give her pride to know that she was named after two special people.

That name is pretty much locked in, but I really need some help with boys names or the problem won't be too many names...it will be him having to sign his name as X for the rest of his life.

But thanks for your opinion.

Dayna
