Boy name suggestions! Help!

My wife and I are trying to pick a boys name to go with our last name which is Buys. We are looking for something that isn't overused or a national favorite at the moment but nothing off-the-wall or strange. So far we are toying around with the following names but we aren't sure how well they fit especially since most of them are single syllable and I read somewhere that single syllable last names should be matched with double or multiple syllable first names. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Oliver Buys (Nickname Ollie)
Owen Buys (worried that this is too popular)
Reed Buys
Jude Buys (or Judah)

Please feel free to suggest other ideas!

Oliver Buys - This is fabulous, I love it
Owen Buys - I like it, it is a bit more popular than the others though
Reed Buys- I wouldn't use a 1 syl name
Jude Buys - see Reed, but I do like Judah a lot

How about...

Micah Buys

Simon Buys

Carson Buys

Garrett Buys

Everett Buys

Thaddeus Buys

Wesley Buys

Quentin Buys

Asher Buys

Nico Buys

Mathias Buys

Elijah Buys

It's commonly said that a single-syllable last name should be paired with a multisyllabic first name; but if ultimately the name that turns out to be your favorite has one syllable, I wouldn't reject the name on the score, alone. I mean, Sam Spade, Kate Spade, Ann Klein - they all work, and I'm sure there are many more. (Yes, future posters - Sam Spade may have been Samuel and Kate Spade may actually be Katherine - I don't know - but they are known by Sam and Kate, so the effect is the same.)

At any rate, in your position, I would probably be on the lookout for multisyllabic choices, but I would go with a one-syllable name if, after all my searching, the name I loved best happened to have one syllable.

I really like the four names you're considering now, and to my ear, they all sound fine - even the one-syllable ones.

I love Oliver, and Judah would work (though Jude Buys is a bit too abrupt for my taste). The same goes for Reed, not to mention the fact that it sounds like two words -- read or even reed, same spelling LOL, and buys. You might want to avoid any word names with your ln. ;)

Your feelings concerning Owen are pretty accurate. It isn't quite in the top 50 yet, but has been rising fairly quickly. You might like Ewan/Euan or Oran as alternatives, however.

Some others that might fit your style:

Henry
Simon
Elliott
Garrett
Nolan
Phineas
Finnian
Sullivan (nn Sully might appeal, being similar to Ollie)
Harvey
Dorian
Walden

Hi there.

Here are my thoughts on your list:

Oliver Buys (Nickname Ollie)-This sounds very nice, & Ollie is too cute. I hate to do this, but I should warn you that Oliver is getting a bit popular. I'm seeing them a lot lately. It's probably not going to be top 10 or anything though.

Owen Buys (worried that this is too popular)-Owen is handsome. I like it a lot. It's a tad common, but not too horrible.

Reed Buys-The one syllable thing isn't that big of a deal. I think it works better w/boy names then girls. Reed is fine. I prefer Reid.

Jude Buys (or Judah)-Judah doesn't do it for me, but I love Jude. I also love Julian nn Jude.

Hope this helps!

I like all of your choices very much! I think Owen Buys sounds best, although Jude is probably my favorites. Owne is increasing in popularity, though. I think that since your last names does not 'stop short'(ie: Clark), then you can get away with a one syllable first name - especially one that does not 'stop short'. Jude Buys sounds fine. Or as you mentioned, you could use Judah and the nn Jude.

Other ideas:
Alden Buys
Conrad Buys
Holden Buys
Russell Buys
Nolan Buys
Preston Buys
Roland Buys
Leland Buys
Harmon Buys

for one syllables, i think these would work fine:
Sean Buys
Dean Buys
Joel Buys
Neil Buys
Vaughn Buys

Good Luck!

i have a 1 syllable last name also and agree that 1 syll. first name isn't ideal.

i would spell it "Reid" also as Reed is like a reed of grass and less common, i think, of a spelling.

i don't think Owen is too popular at all.

i liked Oliver and Jude best.

Nikki's list is really great.
I rethought it and don't think a 1 syllable name would work. So, I would nix Reid.
It would maybe be on my list if not for the confusing spelling issue with 2 equally common spellings.
It's really bad to have to correct every time a person writes your name.
Still happens to my sister every day of her life - as an adult even.
Worse when in school.

My favorite from your list with your last name is Reed. I always go on a case-by-case basis with the "rules" of naming, and Reed Buys just sounds best of your choices--strong, masculine, decisive.
