my husband and i are trying to agree on boy names. we both don't want the same old overused names. we want a very unpopular and unique name. the name he wants was originally on our girl list. he wants the name Ocean. it's in the book as both boy and girl, but i think it sounds more like a girl name. i agreed at first but now i'm changing my mind. he won't try to look for other names, he wants to keep the name. how do i convince him to consider other names? and does anyone have any other suggestions for names?

I agree that it sounds more like a girls name. I typed it into nybler.com, a fun naming website, and it came up as a gilrs name.

I have a little boy in my child care class who's name is Ocean and has an older sister named Sunday. He's the only person I know with the name so I guess to me it is more of a boys name.

Behind the Name (one of the naming sites I trust most, though it has its flaws...like not listing my son's name!) lists it as both male and female. I have to admit, though, that it does feel very feminine to me. I'm not sure why, since other water-body-names like River and Lake sound male to me.

The best way to convince him to look at other names, in my opinion, is to just say "I don't want to use the name." And have other concrete suggestions. Guys don't like open ends when you're shooting them down--they want to know what YOU would do.

i think ocean is pretty in other languages. like french is MER, (meaning sea). why dont you research other languages and then run it by your husband. good luck!

Yeah my husband told me that if we were having a girl that he would pick the name and if it was a boy that i would pick the name (not really fair huh?) anyways he picked Zoey for a girl and i hated it but now we know that its a boy and i picked Malachi and he likes it. Just start suggesting names. my sister was going to name her baby Cash Isaach but his dad changed his name like 5 minutes before he was born idk if you like it you can suggest it to your husband.

Okay, most men want their sons to have very manly names...lol...which is a shock to me that he likes Ocean. I have to say, I think if you go with this name there might be some resentment from your son. He has to live with that name...forever and you want him to appreciate it. I am due in August and I am already trying to figure out names because I don't want to pull some crazy name out of a hat at the hospital and my child hate me for it. I think you should try to explain to him that you both made the baby and you two are a team and this is a big decision and your womanly instincts are telling you to think it over. If all else fails...cry. LOL. Maybe sit him down and tell him you want a name that is significant in some sort of way...maybe go through his family tree. I'm sure you'll figure it out. But I myself think Ocean would be a little toooooo out there and girlie.
